This time i want to offer all you Diy'ers a standalone
Lithium-Ion/Polymer battery charger board that you
can integrate into your own project.

Specs:

: Fully Current Regulated.
: Pre-Charge rate for batts under 3.0v
: Cutoff at 4.2v
: Green led to indicate Charge/Power Status
: Voltage input range from 5v to 7v
: 100mA or 300mA charge rates
: Dimensions .400/10mm x .300/8mm x .120/3mm
: Thru-Hole pitch .100/2.5mm
: Pin size .040/1mm
: Short-Circuit Protection
: Absolutely NO Reverse battery protection !
(Please don't attempt to use a diode to block
the reverse battery condition because it will
cause the charger to overcharge the battery)

The Green status led will turn on when power is applied to the circuit and/or the battery is being charged.
And it will turn off when charging is complete or it is short-circuited.

such a tiny chip can do the proper CC/CV algorithm.. so why can't *fire integrate it into their chargers??

these circuits are simple to use and tiny! I'm surprised more people aren't buying them.

Just finished wiring one of these little guys in a small 4xAA project box from
radio shack. Added a selectable 100<->300ma switch and a Batt OFF/USB <-> On switch.
Charged a couple IMR batts, works well. very convenient.

cut the top off a 5mm led and mouted it topside, the status led on
the charger circuit shines right thru.

integrated voltmeter. :naughty:

grabbed a couple of these circuits off ebay for ~$5
(am i allowed to post the ebay link? if not just pm me..or search ebay for subject of
"RC Lipo battery Voltage Indicator voltmeter (1S-6S)")

seems to work well, it matches the readings of my dvm, so that's a good sign. playing around with it right now..in the end, i'll mount it properly and
probably add a small switch to turn the display on/off.

open batt circuit with the charger on shows 4.20v coming out of the charger.

charger off, testing batt voltage.

turning the charger on at this point, the voltage jumps to 4.02v under charge, as shown in the first pic.

here's a quick and dirty drawing of the circuit..shows switch layouts and stuff.

current iteration. extended and made the usb cable detatchable.
nylon washer to keep magnet leads separated.

computer audio header for attatching voltmeter.

usb cable and voltmeter display dont need to be plugged in for charger to work.

some notes:
-4xAA power doesnt like 300mA charge rate.. it can get batts to about 3.98v..but then i have to flic the switch to 100mA to go higher.
older laptop usb port same thing...new laptop and A/C usb adapter work fine on either 300/100 setting.
i think the 300mA setting doesnt like it when the 4xAA pack voltage is under 5v...its fine when the AA's are fully charged..5xAA might be optimal.
-AW li-ions stop around 4.16v.. IMR's stop at exactly 4.20... fine by me.
-i'm using this thing more than my Triton now.. haha
-it's always on my desk charging something. coworkers like the display.
-one dude said it looks like a homemade bomb timer thingy.
-if i turn the charger on, with no li-ion(open circuit), and it doesnt show 4.20v, i know there's not enough juice in the 4xAA pack for charging.
it's like a self test

Edit, nm i just read the max1555 datasheet and answered most of the questions i had for you. lol. I though there was a lot more parts to this thing. Pretty neet cuircuit. Why is the led resistor so big? Do you have 1uf bypass capacitors on the other side? The datasheet recomends them, are they really needed? What are they for?
