Just buy something more modern?
I bought this light about three years ago and quickly discovered two things.
One, I don't need a belt-mounted battery pack that holds 4 C-cells. Batteries on the headband are fine for me.
Two, I almost never use the halogen bulb light. 99% of the time I merely use the LED's.
You guys seem to know a lot about what's out there today. The problem is, I don't understand what you are talking about. I'm sort of a neanderthal when it comes to technical stuff.
Perhaps if I describe my headlamp needs, I can get good advice on my next purchase.
I do a lot of hunting, camping, and fishing. I need a light with a lot of battery capacity because I stay out in the boonies a lot. I think I'd be happy with a powerful LED light.
Any advice?

That doesn't help us recommend a headlamp.

You need to specify whether you it tightly focused so it throws really far, or mostly diffuse for close-range light, or a combination of the two, and how many brightness levels you need, how many hours of runtime, etc.

without knowing anything else about your requirements, my initial suggestion (subject to modification as your requirements become clearer) would be a 2008 version/model of the Petzl MyoXP or MyoBelt XP. this gives you great brightness, long burntime on low (which is still quite bright), and a flip-up diffuser for task/proximity flood lighting.

Thanks for the responses. Some of the features you've already mentioned sound good.
I'd be mostly using closeup diffused light, but would sometimes like to have a brighter, more focused beam to see farther.
Long burn time on low power would be handy. I'd also like the unit to be simple and rugged.
Does that help?
