I can't really take credit for this, but its such a GREAT mod... I had to share. Others have been doing this with the ROV sportsman and Cabelas 2AA lights.

Start with your N3, a sharp knife and some Arrowhead water bottle caps. Trim away the plastic threads form the inside. Take your time and remove all scrap plastic shavings.

All done.

Push on, twist off. Nice secure tight fit. Protects the bezel and lens from scratches too.

AA action... anyone want a really nice camping light?

Before, tight beam, Cree rings, limited flood, wall at 5 feet.

After, smooth smooth smooth, big hot spot, nice flood, wall at 5 feet. Does not seem to increase heat build-up in the head.

These particular caps add a slight yellow tint to the hot spot, gives it a more Xenon like tint. Nice for close-range use, little easier on the eyes IMHO.

I have done a similar mod.

You take a piece of very thin clear plastic and give it one layer (or more if you prefer) of translucent office tape then cut it into the same shape as the glass lens. Then you remove the lens, place the plastic diffuser behind it and put it all back together.
This gives a clean appearence and is great making the RC-N3 suitable for a bikelight but it is a pain to take it out in a hurry.

I prefer you're mod as it is easier to remove and I'll have to try it.
Thanks for sharing!

Nice. I don't like the N3 as it's too much of a spot without being powerful enough to be a thrower. This would smooth it out nicely- top marks :)

Looks like a nice mod.

One could try with polyester tracing film (like Microtrace) or plotting film for plotters. May give a little variation on the result.

you can also take a white film canister and stick it right on there, no cutting or anything, go to any camera store they'll give u one for free.

You should try the blue caps as well....i have also tried orange and green.....but find the white and blue most useful. Nice mod and an easy way to make a diffuser.

Just had to post some pics because I just discovered this, but not only can the body of a film canister make a good diffuser, but the cap of some cannisters works really well too and looks a bit more like this water bottle cap diffuser. You just have to use the outside of the cap not the inside and it fits like it was made for it, no modification of any kind required! It adds some rings to the beam but it is an overall fairly pleasant effect. Sorry no beamshots, i don't know how to take them properly, or maybe my camera isnt good enough.

looks good with the body of the canister, too bad i dont have one laying around since digital has been out....i might have one laying around with my rc stuff.
