If you are new to LED flashlights and you're here looking for ideas for your first light I would like to mention a few things.
I have several Sure-Fire lights. I think they're a great product. Would I recommend them for a first time LED flashlight user? No. Let me quickly qualify this statement before I get branded as a know-nothing crazy person .
This assumes that you are a young person without money to burn. Maybe still in school. I still remember saving up for my first BB gun when I was a kid. It takes a lot of discipline to save.
Just to get you into the hobby in less than a year while you save up for your first expensive light, why not just take a little money and get something to keep you busy while you wait.
I'm in no way suggesting you go out and buy a low quality light that will break while you're pulling it out of the package. No, instead I would suggest you take a look at your local Target, Walmart or hardware store.
I think the Energizer 1W LED running 1AA battery is a fine flashlight to get you into the hobby. A simple easy to press forward switch with a two hour runtime using only one inexpensive battery.
If you want something brighter you could get the 2AA 3 watt version. Reverse clicky, 3 hour runtime.
For 17 bucks each, it's not a bad deal. I own both and use the 1AA more because it has a belt clip. These are lights you'll actually use. While you'll worry about losing a $100 - $200 flashlight, you can just clip this one on your belt and forget about it till you need it. If you lose it or scratch it up you're only out $17. Plus these lights have a real sturdy feel to them. They should stand up to abuse pretty well.
The 1AA is plenty bright enough to walk outside without tripping over stuff. The 2AA is quite a bit brighter and has a nicer beam tint to my eyes.
Here is a pic of mine if you are interested.
I hope this information helps someone thinking about their first flashlight purchase. This is only my personal opinion, you may find something you like better in this price range. But at least it's a place to start.
