I just bought an E2E and it came with a OP reflector! My Surefire friend says he has never heard of such a thing.

What gives?

All my SF incan reflectors are OP or LOP, including my E series reflectors. I think only the 3" turbo heads were smooth.

Re: E2E Head That's OP?

All of my E1e/E2e bezels have OP reflectors. There's some variation in texture from model to model, but I've yet to see a E-series bezel with a smooth reflector.

Chris - I think you meant to say "very heavy OP" or darn near close to stipple.

Chris bought an E2e and FM Strion kit after seeing mine in action. It's a really nice incan pocket thrower - great beam that has reach. He got his E2e in and it has an almost stipple reflector compared to mine which is very light OP - there is a huge difference in the reflector surface, and therefore his has a much floodier beam with not much reach.

I took a couple of pics of our E2e's to show the difference. I had not heard that SureFire had changed the reflectors they used in these lights. In effect, mine is practically SMO and his is practically stipple, which provides vastly different beams. It looked like it was an older E2e, because it didn't have chemcote on the inside of the body, and a 17670 fit perfectly into the light without any sandpaper. Mine took quite a bit of time with a dremmel to open up the tapering near the tail of the light. But apparently SureFire made another change with the more recent version of the E2e to provide more throw to the beam.

Left - My E2e (very light OP) / Right - Chris's E2e (very heavy OP or even stipple?)

Neither of my E2e's are hot off the shelf, they both look like the pic on the right and both have bodies that fit 17670's.

Random batch variation.

Trading to get what you prefer is always an option. I like the smoother, more throwy E2E.

Wow, I would hope SureFire does better this in regards to consistency from batch to batch. If this was the case you could never order one online because you wouldn't know what you are getting..

I tend to think his is an older model, and they purposely changed to a throwier reflector in the newer models. We'll find out as he's returning his and getting a brand new one. His was obviously not new as it had wear around the sharp edges and clip. It didn't even have chemcote on the inside of the battery tube.

Re: E2E Head That's OP?

My E2D looks like the lower photo. Can the upper bezel be removed? There is a lot of dust on my reflector and back of lens.

Re: E2E Head That's OP?

I'm a fan of the lighter OP reflectors myself, they throw so much better. I have one on a couple of my EDC lights. I usually ditch the heavy OP reflector heads for the lighter ones.

Great pictures by the way RichS.

Thanks ampdude. I'm actually kind of surprised that I've never heard anything on the forum regarding SureFire changing these reflectors. With such a popular little incan light, and such a significant change in beam profiles I would have thought it would have been mentioned here on CPF before.

Re: E2E Head That's OP?

I was going to post a thread on this awhile back, but never did. Do you think it is a change? I've always assumed it was just variences in production, as I've seen all different extremes over the years. Some heads very heavy OP and some very light. I've even observed the reflectors get slightly larger in diameter on the newer stock (post red cardboard box) E2e's.

This extreme of a difference? Yes, I think it was an intentional change. I would would be surprised if a company like SureFire let their production variance get that far off without someone noticing.

Re: E2E Head That's OP?

I was thinking it probably was just not an issue with most people. I've seen the same vintage E2e's come out of the same boxes with very close serial numbers and one have a LOP and the other have a HOP, so while you may be right I have to disagree based on my experience over the years with them.

Re: E2E Head That's OP?

I bought my E2E here via in B/S/T section in Mar 07. It's a heavy OP like the bottom photo. I've never checked to see if a 17670 would fit.

Re: E2E Head That's OP?

If it's the newer round body version, there's a good chance a protected 17670 may not fit. I use the IMR16340 cells regardless of whether I'm using incan or led though, so it's not really an issue for me.

Re: E2E Head That's OP?

All my SureFire lights and lamp assemblies are Light OP, I've never seen a single SureFire reflector which was not textured.

Re: E2E Head That's OP?

Does yours look more like the left or right picture?
My latest SureFire E series (E1e-HA) looks like the one on the right picture. But don't make the mistake of assuming that the silver coated tube is the "older version with no chemkote finish", when it's quite the opposite. Newer SureFire lights come with a environment-friendly coating which is transparent (required by some new Californian Laws). So I'd have to say, Chris's E2e is the latest model just like mine.

Very interesting.. well, Chris has 2 more brand new E2e's on the way, so it will be interesting to see which reflector they have.
