Fashion Student needs help please (flashing light?)

You could use the beacon mode on a regular Quark..... It fades in to full and back out again in about 2 sec or so every 10 seconds.....

sorry but I have no idea what a quark is, or what beacon mode is, could you post a link for me to see? so sorry.... as i said I dont know much about these things...

Ray of Light is correct. You will be looking for a standard ready-to-purchase item that does what you need. You do not say where you live, but these electronic "in home" timers are likely available locally in most parts of the world. Try to pick a very flexible one like the one linked to. You might not be able to turn a light on and off every five seconds, but perhaps you can turn it on and off every minute or so (which might be more effective in fact).

what you need is a motion sensor that turns the light off, so from a distance it lights up but when you get close it goes off and when you stop moving it lights up again lol
not sure how you would do that though right away.

...For my fashion exhibition I need one of two things... ...To light a small 1.5m x 1.5m dark space where my fashion garment will be displayed... ...a sensor (like a motion sensor?) that makes the light turn OFF when someone approaches my fashion garment display.

I'm trying to represent the LOAD SHEDDING in South Africa where the government did budget enough for electricty so the electricty supplier cuts the public's lights and electricty off and random times of the day, just as this is frustrating for people in their houses suddenly not having lights, I want it to be frustrating for the people at the exhibition to suddenly not have lights to see my garment... ...please keep in mind im a student so working on a ridiculously low budget..... please also keep in mind that im a fashion student so do not know much about electric gadgets and such :)
Here's a 'Brief Overview' - if it's feasible for you, I can go into 'slightly' more detail; if not, I'll direct you to the X10 Community Forum where you may find a volunteer able to 'hold your hand'... (It's technical, but really not very difficult!)
  • The MS14A contains TWO sensors - motion and light; and for a specific HouseCode (HC), it controls TWO Unit Codes (UC) - UC and UC+1. The ON TIME is adjustable via powers of 2 - 1, 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64, 128, 256 minutes
For this example, we'll set HC/UC to A8 and TIME to 2 minutes.
    .
  • When MS14A detects motion, it will 'SEND' A8 ON. TM751 RF Transceiver will receive this and 'SEND' A8 ON over the powerlines. If you also set LM15A Socket Rocket Lamp Module to A8, the lamp will turn ON.
    .
  • If this lamp shines on MS14A, the photocell will detect light and 'SEND' A9 OFF. If the outlet on the TM751 is set to A9, a lamp plugged into it (lighting up the 'fashion garment') will turn OFF.
    .
  • After the delay (2 minutes in this example), MS14A will 'SEND' A8 OFF via RF to TM751 which will 'SEND' A8 OFF over the powerlines turning LM15A OFF.
    .
  • With the source of light removed, the photocell in MS14A will detect DARK and 'SEND' A9 ON, turning the light over the 'fashion garment' back ON.

I'm using TWO lamps here in order to invoke NOT logic for the Motion Sensor.
Let me know if you, or someone you know, can follow this... :)

I just want you to know that I can't follow this...

:p
I'm surprised! :faint: :poke: :tinfoil:

On the other hand, I (and maybe countless other LURKERs) cannot quite grasp the proposed simplicity of the data being presented in the ongoing Ragone Plots (Mapping Battery Performance: An Intro to Ragone Plots)  :banghead:

Perhaps you can break them down into 'More-Easily-Digestible' chunks?

Back to my 'Fashion Student' Solution: If you just pay attention to the Device Names and what functions they LOGICALLY perform, it seems SIMPLE to me. Of course, I've been running X10 devices in my home ~30+ years, starting from when they were BSR.

Motion Detector turns ON Light #1
Which activates Photosensor (Dawn)
Which turns OFF Light #2 ('Fashion Garment').

After set delay (2 minutes), Motion Detector turns OFF Light #1
Which de-activates Photosensor (Dusk)
Which turns ON Light #2.

Any clearer?
