Sorry guys, I'd forgotten all about this.
In the end it was the tailcap switch. I got the lights from fenix-store, they were pretty good about it and sent me two new switch units straight away.
I used the points of a pair of needlenose pliers (thanks WadeF) to change the switches over, it was really simple and no more problems since.
One T1 was for a friend, and one was for me. Mine's been relegated to back up in my garage now.
Got a TK10 now, great light but it does whine a little on high. Had a few other Fenix lights since as well and no problems really either...
