not a new light, has had some use. unscrew the head, hmmm smells like chemicals? cr123 doesn't appear to be leaking, although the wrapper on the top looks like it got hot... vaproized glue?

probably shouldn't be sniffing it!

edit: p1d-ce. long time lurker, hurray for my first post. hello world.

hello! welcome welcome

I've been wondering this myself also... but I have a good feeling that it has something to do with the CR123a Lithium batteries and "venting" gasses :sick2: I stopped smelling that stuff when I kinda got the feeling that it was not good for your health...

I have seen comments on this before, I always thought it smelled of Diethyl Ether http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diethyl_ether (to my moderately educated nose) but the thread that was linked is the first time I have seen someone else make the same identification.

I think it is likely that ether is used in the manufacturing process, as a small molecule, it might leak out through the vent reasonably easily when the cell is warmed up.

If we're all talking about the same thing, I get the same smell with new CR123's stored in air tight containers.

i often hear of this smell, yet my energypsters e-2 overpriced locally purchaced batteries have never stank like that.
mabey somone should sell some "New Battery Scent" so i can hang it from my car rear view mirror.

you know i did finnaly discover what the "New Car Smell" is, its GLUE :green:

i wont mention the study that showed that 6mo new PCs have toxic fumes comming out of them, untill the pc burns in and settles down.
(well you mentined it anyways didnt ya )

I've heard the older humans get, the more toxic fumes they emit.

I've noticed that from all types of lithium cells including L91 AA's. It's part of the reason I prefer NiMH AA powered lights.

Every flash light I own that is 123 powered has this smell.
I use my U2 frequently and thus change batteries in it more than any
of the others. When I remove the tail cap, out comes that smell.:sick2:
