I am doing a small DIY project, and the pill I am working with has a spot for a round 14mm emitter board. I would like to put an XR-E R2 in it, but, not knowing what I am doing yet, I ordered one that came on a 20mm star board. So, two questions:
1) Is it possible to buy an XR-E R2 on a round 14mm base?
2) Can I trim the star down to fit into the 14mm opening without harming it?
Thanks!

You can buy it on a smaller star, I would advise on not trimming the board. You can always try unsoldering the emitter from the 21mm board and resoldering to a smaller one.

Being first DIY, don't try the last one with the led you have, practice with a dead or cheap led a few times.

-Why do you advise against trimming the board on my current one?
Thanks

DX sells XRE Q5s on a 14mm board

You could use the bare LED from your 20mm board
Just carefully heat up the underside of the board and the
LED will slide off.
If your heatsink is conductive you then need to isolate/remove
the electrical contacts on the underside of the LED.
Now all you have to do is solder your wires to the contacts on the top,
those tiny strips either side of the dome ;)
