Hi
I am looking for a aa*2 / 18650 light
now i need help decide what i should do !
i think a quark aa2 with 18650 tube will fit my needs perfectly, but ther is a big notch, i have to buy now( to use it BEFORE The summer. I have no need for a light in summertime)

anybody knows if some good lights are coming this year before aug/sep

should i buy the Quark now or should i wait until sept and buy a POTENTIALLY better light ?

Also feel free to suggest other lights!

What??

Everyone needs a light all year long.

Yes, there probably will be a better light by Sept., but it probably won't be much better. If you need something now, then now is the time to buy. Maybe a cheaper light now, and save for that really good one later?

When you live near the polar circle. You only need a light in the wintertime ,,, because the sun is up for like 20 hours in the summertime ,,,, (if you live north of the circle, then it is up all night long for a short period of time)

I have to ask, why buy an AAx2 and then pay for the 18650 tube? If you don't already have the 18650 cells and charger, save your money. I pondered getting an 18650 tube but since the brightness level is the same with either AA's or Li-Ion and the runtime is only slightly longer with the 18650, it wasn't worth it to me. I have lots of Duraloops here so I didn't need to buy another battery type and charger. Plus the Li-Ion protected cells shut off suddenly instead of dropping output levels as the batteries get weak, so there is little or no warning of a dead battery.

Check this thread for details of battery life using an 18650:

I would suggest you buy what you need/want now since there will always be a better light next year. Just like computers, the LED technology keeps improving, so you will never have the best or brightest or longest runtime for very long. I recently bought the Quark AAx2 Tactical with R5 emitter and I'm very happy with the performance. It should last me 20 years easily since I'm not rough with my gear, and it's a lot easier to carry around than the big Maglites, and a lot more useful than the small Mags.

There are always better lights "just around the corner", so if you wait for the "perfect" light to come along then you'll never end up getting a light.

My advice: look at what's currently available and then pick the one that best fits your needs/desires. As far as current lights are concerned, the Quark series is an excellent choice.

There is always something better around the corner. That's what makes flashlights so interesting (and expensive). You may as well buy now, because there is no danger of the Quark line changing their system and ruining compatibility between parts (unlike what Fenix has done twice now).

Others right now drive the XP-G harder for more output. Others right now have beam tint that is less likely to be green If output and tint are not important to you Quark does have an artifact free beam and a nice UI. It depends what is most important to you.

Dereelight Javelin with their XP-G drop in is whiter and brighter IMO and you can add an extension to go to 3 X AA if you wish to.

+1 for quarks.

if your living way up north, im going to say its Cold! maybe lithium primary batteries would be a better choice, because of its wider operating temperature. and have a shelf life of about 10 years. But AA size is great too, because you have even more battery type options, and are easier to find.

also suggest something in a warmer tint, if there is alot of snow and ice. the warmer tint might make it easier to see things compared to the cool tints.

A little Trick keep the light in a pocket close to the body so the batteries are "warm" when you start to use them. this way you get a little more power out of them. some say it damages the electronics ,,,, i don't think so because it works for me !

Body heat will not damage the electronics. Lithiums definitely fare better in cold weather than any other chemistry commonly used.

It is not the body heat it is the difference in temprature from 37 C to - 30 C around 67 C in difference THAT can damage electronics,,,,
