hid ballast ?

If they dont fit inside the encloser of your mod can they be removed from the metal casing? Is the metal casing a heatsink or does it only protect the circuitry from the elements? Has anyone opened one?

I've only seen two or three HID ballasts with the covers removed, and the electronics were firmly potted to the case. And in one of them, some large transistors were riveted to the case (probably for heatsinking). It doesn't seem to be an easy project to me; probably easier to redesign the case so you don't violate the integrity of the ballast.
