I am looking for a small HID option for a portable video light. Right now I am looking at other alternatives to the traditional halogen type.

A video light needs the following:

1) Small size high intensity bulb.

2) 12vdc powering, to be fed from batteries. No AC.

3) Low price.

4) Brightness equivalent to a 50w or better halogen.

5) No frontal lens, if possible, that might cause irregular patterns in the light spot. Mirrors may also be a problem.

As I have never seen any such commercial product using an HID bulb, I wonder if there is one.

We better start with a lamp and ballast that can work with 12v DC. Are there any?

Doesn't sound like you're too far from an Amondotech Illuminator/Sam's Club 35 Watt HID. You can run it from 12 Volts and you can remove the front window. Not sure about the reflector, though. I has a pretty smooth beam and spot as-is - with reflector and window. Sam's Club (less than $100.00) uses 6000K lamp and AT ($140.00) uses 4200K.

Just looked at mine again. It charges with 12+ Volts from an A/C adapter. I just tried to run it while charging and it works. The charging LED is on so I would guess its charging also but the rate of charge will not keep up with power consumption. It may not be good for th electronics either.
