Is a Triton2 charger worth it?

Hi everyone. Unfortunately like most of you trying to make the jump into rechargeables gets a little overwhelming.

Here is what I know.....I know I would like to use NiMH's in AA (for cameras, my Fenix lights, and big lights like a M@g85 with FM battery holders), NiMH C and D sizes for runtime for one to three LED mods for M@glites. I strongly want to use AW's Li-ion C sized batteries that are longer than the regular C (can't remember the number right now) additionally in the future for multiple LED mods. Possibly RC123's in my Fenix and SF (coming soon) lights.

I have looked at the smaller, cheaper smart chargers particularly that Alin10123 is offering. Looks good for NiMH, really good, but then you have to get another for Li-ion's.

Since the Triton is no longer made and will also charge just about anything, anywhere, anytime.....is the Triton2 just as good? I know its around $124 right now. Looked at the Triton Jr. and it looks like it would just take longer to charge but will still charge everything.

If I go for it and get a Triton2, would any of you consider this stupid? Is there another charger, just as capable (and fool proof) you could recommend?

Thanks for you input.

For better intregration of batts and charger it is better to get seperate charger for different chemistries. I think that getting a Triton2 is a must for li-ions and also for breaking in a pack. But for Nimh single cells, I would get the Maha 808M for AAA, AA C and D. Its more user friendly. The Triton2 would also need another power supply as it only runs on 12vdc. I have the Duratrax ICE which is also made by the same Korean maker, only with a bigger screen. I made my 12vdc power supply out of an old computer power supply. I also have the Maha 801D which only charges AAA and AA. Should have just gotten the 808M. My 2 cents.

Ok, thanks for the suggestions. Based on your comments I will go look at the Maha chargers. I just didn't know if it was worth it to put all my eggs in one basket or have a bunch of chargers around.

I agree with Kevin, I have a triton2 and a Maha 808M. Takes care of all my needs.

OK BVH, I am going to put you on the spot. I can afford both chargers, however, just looking at it from a wife perspective (with chargers all around me) would the Triton Jr be ok or should I really just say the hell with it and get that "premium" solution of the Triton2?

Also, sorry to put you on the spot again. What battery types are you charging with the Triton and how are you recharging them. (packs, individual, ect) I am very interested to see what and how you are using the Triton and also are you using the Maha charger just for the NiMH? Have Enoloopes yet? If so, how do you like them or if you don't what do you have that have convinced you to stay with them and not pony up for those new batteries.

Thanks,

Bob E.

Hello Bob,

One issue that has come up with the Triton Jr is its safety shut off timer. It is set for 90 minutes, and is not adjustable. If you get one, you need to charge at a rate that completes the charge in 90 minutes or less.

This means that you can't do 0.1C 16 hour forming charges with the Triton Jr.

Triton Jr is a better option IMHO and cheaper to boot.

I prefer to use my MH-9000 to charge AA/AAA instead of using magnets and wires connected to Triton Jr. But you'll endup buying hobby charger anyway :)
