I may have just had my head under a rock or something, but I just discovered something that took me by surprise.

A fellow CPFer sent me his KL1 to be modded. As usual, I just cracked it open to mod it and, under the optic, was sitting a 1W HIGH DOME luxeon. Although I can't verify the binning, it appears white with a blue tint to it. The person that sent me the KL1 also verified that he had indeed purchased the KL1 new in the Surefire baggie.

Is this something that Surefire is now doing or was this just a fluke? If Surefire is now selling the KL1's with high domes, the KL1 may very well become the most cost effecitve mod platform out there. All you'll need to do is overdrive and add a reflector, if you are so inclined.

Does anyone that is "in the know" have the scoop on this?

I have new KL1 head that also has a high dome. I thought it was awful white compared to what others have mentioned. I know it is a hight dome because I just opened the head. Also I opened it up with just my hands. Just got it 2 days ago still sealed in the bag. It is also white with a square blue tint around it. It has the FCC and CE markings on it. My seriel # is A09103. I was going to have it moded when I got it but dont see any reason in it now. I would like to have a reflector though. Will the Minimag reflector work?

Edit: I found bunches of info on the minimag reflector /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif.

Hummmmm.... I wonder if these HD's are 1W's or Lux III's???

Al,

I haven't seen one of these "new" KL1's and even if I had, there is no way I know of in telling a 1W from Lux III emitter? A III should be more efficient at converting electrons to photons at higher levels of current but I don't see how that would be a conclusive test on a single specimen. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/icon3.gif And on this one, I keep my speculation to myself! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thinking.gif

Don, I would have thought you of all people would be able to tell?

hmm, i thought of all people, you are the one that should have known the first time of this, Al. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

well, Mcgizzy too

Don, So what you're saying is that your statement is based on partial and imperfect knowledge, and often speculation?
I do think it's a bit rude not to warn us of this when you post.

shiftd,

Well you know the way PK just prattles on about all sorts of stuff... It's difficult to know when to be paying attention. I want an M1000. LED's are boring. I'm doing my best to steer PK back to bulbs.

Al

Lol Al
i will do my best to keep you from doing that /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif
I think a variation to lux is a good one. But i agree, M1000 (whatever it is) would be cool too /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Don, while lux3 is better at high current, Kl1 only operates at 350 mA, so using Lux3 over lux1 does not give much gain /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/icon3.gif

Al... perhaps you would like a few days off? I would be glad to stand in for you, and make sure to pay attention to everything PK says and more. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

M1000 is the little (slimmer) brother of the M2000 which of course is what was released as the 10X. If PK can do this using an LED then great, but the way the KL1 is looking who can tell? If it's taken until now to go from low to high dome, imagine how long it will take for SureFire to be using 5W Luxeons or whatever. Back to bulbs I say!

Al

Nah ... patience is the key to victory ... not a step backwards like bulbs /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/icon15.gif
I hope you're kidding Al ... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

As far as "rumor" goes, new KL1 would be utilizing LIII and Pyrex optic lens. While it would be underdriven, it projects hell bright. Umm... the beam might be squared as you would expected like most high dome on optics.

Alan

I was also told that the KL-1 was going to be weak and I bought one just for mod. but I was surprised when I put that on the E1E, it is more powerful and white than my KL-3, and I don't see any reason to mod this light now.

KL1 Version 2! They for sure will do this to the KL3 too eventually I imagine. I was wondering when they would do this.

ShiftD: Using a LuxIII where it will receive 350ma or less has very good reasons actually. They all are pretty good in color, they all have high output, and the Vf, even if high at 700ma will likely be less than a 1W at 350ma.. So they end up being efficeint, increaseing battery life, and giving you more brightness! Lumileds should just phase out the 1W's and make the luxIII's thier 350/700/1000ma multi leds... Well then where would all the higher Vf luxeons go? ah might as well keep 1w's around... heh.
