been into flashlights for about 1 year and now i'm getting into knives. Started out with these 2 just yesterday. I hate waiting for shipment.

Anybody know what I'm getting into?

SOG Flash II

And

Byrd Meadowlark Black ComboEdge BY04BKPS

it just dawned on me by reading a few threads on this board.

Are assisted knives considered switchblades? I'm in California and i'm now worried about carrying the SOG flash2 around in the car or while going to the hardware store ect..

They shouldent be coz you hace to manuallt start to open the knife before the mechanism kiks in .

your best of checking with local authorites though coz here in the uk it is down to the person who stops you and weather there a c*** or not:thumbsdow

It a real grey area without much clasification.:thumbsdow:thumbsdow

Spyderco's Byrd range are pretty good knives for the price. The steel doesn't have the best edge retention, but is easy and satisfying to sharpen, so you can get some practice with that. If I were you I would have gone for the plain edge version as combo with a 3" blade is a bit "worst of both worlds", but I'm sure you'll still like it.
Welcome to the world of blades, any money you have left over from the flashlights will be disappearing in short order :D

i have a kershaw leek, and its an assisted blade. CA laws dont consider them as switchblades....yet.

you should check out some spyderco knives, and benchmade knives.
spyderco are great at good prices.

dont think you chose badly at all.

flashII offers big blade, assisted opening, and minimal weight in one package. (i like it alot.. i guess you saw my remarks of it here if you browsed thru the topics) decent blade, nice shape to many tasks and slices nice. pretty easy to sharpen as its not extremely tough like in "high" end knives.

byrd.. i gave mine to my friend without actually using it. (it wasnt as solid and sturdy and heavy as the Tenacious i use at work) nice knife still. its a good value knife. i originally got it to quench my thirst to buy a delica.. didnt get a chance to do that as i sold it too fast. so i just bought the delica and got it last week. different state of exellence.

but if you look for cheap spyderco, look at tenacious or persistence (if the weight doesnt matter)

i carry sog when im off work because it (they) are so light. (twitch2, flash1 flash2.)

after i bought sog flash2 i just fell hard for the assisted openers. you will know very soon if you like it or not yourself. some dont like them others like me do. thats why it was smart of you to order "traditional" type and gadget type knives. to scope what you like and dont like. (its like i do/did in flashlights when i started with them.. ordered some cheap dx lights to test if i like the ui etc. )

Thanks all for the comments. In terms of the legality of even carrying knives like the Flash2, it's something you have to be continually educated on and aware of. I know this because of the vagueness and inability to get black and white answers for simple questions like " is this knife legal in XXX city/state". you never get a straight answer, and the laws change so outdated responses may no longer be accurate.

With that said i would still ask the questions here. "is the Flash2 legal EDC in California?" I'll leave it up to me to personally find out in my specific City/county.

The UK Laws are a little messed up...but that definitely isn't legal to carry unless you have good reasons to, which would be practically impossible to prove.

The only knives you can carry are folding knives with a blade less than 3inches that does not lock in place once opened.

Obviously there are exceptions to that rule for knives required for your profession if you are currently on the job or on the way to/from.

here in finland. not legal to carry. anything.

but expetion to rule is the same: knives required for your profession, if you are currently working on task you need one. or on the closed jobsite. but not generally allowed to carry if on the way to/from there. you gotta take it off.

stupid rules and laws. its not likely i or anyone else carries a switch blade an expensive one too, to use on someone. as for those tasks (if you intend to use it on someone) you should be carrying something cheap and inexpensive solid blade knife that you can toss away or leave sticking in, without grief. not an expensive spyderco or flash.
