hi,

i was wondering if the kx2c is a boiler like the kl4? is it the same emitter?

thanks,

completely different league. Cree/P4 based lights barely get warm, even running at high currents, thanks to much better efficiency.

ok thanks. i guess i'll get it. i like the beam(wall) on the kl4 much better but i can only use that light for 10 minutes at a time before i cannot touch it.

I have a single stage E2DL which basically has the KX2C head with crenulations. It gets warm after ten minutes, but not hot like an L4.

The KX2C beam is the opposite of the KL4, very throwy. If you want a lot of spill you might be better served with something else.

So the KX2C and the E2D Led both uses the Cree/P4?
What does the L4 uses?

Both use Cree LEDs, but not sure if the bin is the same - P4 or Qx.

The KL4 has a Lumileds LuxV (Luxeon five) LED.

I never figured out how surefire got away with stuffing the luxV in the KL4 head, theres just simply too little room for heatsinking in it. yet I don't recall there have ever been complaints.

When I received my KX2 [single stage CREE] I was panicking because there was no heat felt on the head even after 20 minutes of running, heck compared to the temperature of my hands the KX2 felt like an ice Popsicle [okay, not that cold but just as shocking:crackup:]

I thought ":awman: beautiful tint and the thermal bridges amiss in the head, so my cree will cook without me ever knowing :ohgeez: "
but after asking around, ppl got similar results and found the KX2 is only drawing ~120-150ma compared to the luxV of 900-1100ma at 6V:eek:

you complained and didn't document the item?
great, now theres no proof of an overheating KL4 for surefire to see, not that your KL4 was the only one:laughing:

my l4 never overheated. as in it never malfunctioned. it just gets too hot to hold.

i did however have a p1d burn a hole through my trousers! it was in the middle of the night. my pants were on the floor with the p1d in the pocket. i had the bezel twisted just before it comes on. it came on by itself while i was sleeping and i smelled something burning. i awoke to find a hole in my pants lol.

i have the KX2C and a an F04 beamshaper. pretty versitile with throw + flood. who needs a horribly inefficient L4 when you can throw on the F04 on for the same effect?

Not even close, two totally different beams. The KX2C/F04 does not have a wide beam, the L4 does. The KX2C/F04 is more flood, while the L4 is a wall of light. Its pretty easy to distinguish.

i posted in another thread that i have dubbed the inova k5 the baby l4. i am now not a huge fan of the kx2 or kx2c. of which i now own both. the beam is too narrow and too much throw for close quarters use. the kx2 and kx2c have their purpose though.
they just do not flood a room.

My first KX2C head got quite hot. The hot spot was also half yellow and half white so I exchanged it. My second sample did not seem to get as hot as the first one but was just as bright.

my kx2c gets warm. no where near as "warm" as the l4. the kx2 is cool.

i got (about) an hour and fifteen minutes on fresh sanyo cr123a's from the kx2c. is that normal?
i guess it's great to use a minute here and there or whatever.

According to the KX2C product description on the SureFire website. "Power regulation circuitry provides two hours of tactical-level light output on a set of two 123A SureFire lithium batteries."

well, i am finding out surefire is way overestimating runtime like everyone else these days. at least they don't overestimate lumens. they underestimate lumens still :)

i saw plots here at cpf that the kx2(not c) shuts down after 6 hours. that's far from the 11 advertised.

you know what else i noticed? the p1d is brighter in turbo mode than the kx2c. although it's turbo mode is good for five minutes anyways.

i think it's time for me to get a p3d!

so far i do not find the kx2c and kx2(2008) that valuable to me. i can get an old one speed kx2 that might be usefull to me. nowdays i'd rather have runtime instead of the sun.

i have a modified keymate that is much brighter than the kx2's low too!

so, i can now at least answer my own question. the kx2c only gets mildly warm.
