Wow, between the bad experiences you had in Vegas and the bicyclists that were mean and abusive to you in SF and Chicago you must have had a miserable trip.

At the very least, you'd think that the hotels/casinos would not want the mess around their property and the added expense of having to have it cleaned up several times a day... :ironic:

Just guessing, but I'm convinced that is the reason you are seeing more of the sidewalks moved up closer to the buildings instead of out by the streets during remodels (think Planet Hollywood). It puts the walkway on private property and allows the casino to control things better. Has anyone ever seen a "porn slapper" in front of Planet Ho? I haven't.

That said, I find that I am never bothered by them if I simply make eye contact, smile, and shake my head as I walk by. Wish I could say the same for the timeshare guys, those are the real plague on the strip, IMHO.

I share your thoughts. This is why we stopped walking on LV Blvd between casinos. Many casino's have a bridge between them so it is easier to stay inside and away from these types. The rest, we drove to. When I was first coming out as a single lad of 22 or so, it was amusing. Some 20 years later and now married...it's not.

The Waikiki shopping, hotel area I thought was pretty close in Vegas feel. This lacked the printed advertising but I felt it almost as blatant.

I get to go to vegas usually around twice a year. Done it for the past 20 years or so, so I've gotten to see a lot change. Those guys have been there handing out their little cards for many years. I know how awkward it makes you feel, especially if you're walking the strip with your mother. :faint: There are a lot less of them now than there used to be. Most of the strip is no longer sidewalk , its casino administered property and most of the casinos keep those pimps away. But there are still a few places that haven't been "upgraded" yet, so those guys tend to really pack in tight into those areas.
Anyway don't sweat it too much, don't expect any sort of response from local authorities either though.

Fremont Street is North Vegas, just avoid North Vegas entirely. Don't go North of the Trump.

I don't even know how to address this entire thread! But a couple facts at least. Fremont street which runs from the three corners of Charleston BLVD, Boulder Highway and Fremont St to Main St. is not in North Las Vegas. It is in the incorporated City of Las Vegas. North Las Vegas doesn't start until you head north on LVBLVD at Owens. The incorporated City of Las Vegas ends at LVBLVD and Sahara Blvd. Everything south of that is the un-incorporated Clark County. In the City, Council and the Mayor both have passed aggressive statutes against passing out these fliers. The handbillers must all be licensed, have to stay in a 4 block area east and west of LVBLVD, and when they are passing out these bills in many places they must stay in the small painted boxes (which I painted and signed myself by the way.) In addition all the newspaper racks you see must be licensed every year by the City of Las Vegas. Failure to license is punished by seizure of those racks, which are crushed. There is a staff of 2 people to handle this duty, along with MANY other duties.

One of MY many duties includes assisting these other 2. In addition, me along with my 13 crew workers are responsible for over 1 million signs in the City, hundreds of thousands of feet of markings on roadways, curbs, medians, 1 freeway, parking lots and parking garages. As well as any whim the traffic engineer or City Council chooses to throw our way. Our staff of 14 is exactly the same size crew that did the job since 1976, but with many many times more maintenance and installs then was ever imagined at the time. The City as a whole has had 85 layoffs this year and faces 185 more in the early 2009 fiscal year. Also all classified employees are being asked to take a 1% paycut successively for the next 3 years minimum. As well as a total hiring freeze for all but the most important positions.

Most of these handbillers as well as the blatant prostitution that takes place in Las Vegas, especially in areas of downtown and the "strip" are of course illegal and unwelcome. Enforcement becomes a major issue of course. The county (of Clark) City of North Las Vegas, City of Henderson and the entire surrounding area faces many of the same challenges. Mayor Oscar Goodman has no influence in those area's though of course.

I was born in this City in 1971, and have lived here my whole life. I intend to raise my daughter here as well. Other than when I am at work, I most all the time avoid the "Strip" and other touristy spots. It is a complete shame it has come to this. That being said, we have the worlds largest manmade lake, are withing 30 minutes of Mt Charleston and the ski lodge. 30 minutes drive to Red Rock Canyon, 15 minutes from my house to Kodachrome basin. Boulder City is near, Death Valley is close. It is a 5 hour drive to the lovely beachs of SoCo. I have always considered Las Vegas a great "jumping off place." I will say that in the neighborhoods (yes we do have them, we don't all live in casinos) good people can still be found.

I have come to think that this is true everywhere and is just a sign of the degradation of modern people and cities everywhere. I hope I am wrong.

If I do go to enjoy some of the world class properties offered in our city, and with my family, I take a very aggressive approach to protecting them, and luckily for me I have always been able to do so. Rarely has it ever become physical, normally my bearing and body language is enough. It is important to always be aware of, and the master of, your surroundings.

It actually pains me to see what most peoples opinions of Las Vegas has become, but remember we have well over 2 million people living here, and it really is true a few bad apples spoil the bunch.

Side note: Greta, where is it that you live if you don't mind my asking? I mean, not your address or anything, but are you in Nevada? What City?

Very nice informative post, thanks

Perhaps you could use your contacts, to pass on some of the comments in this thread, and also perhaps ask for some enforcement ?
