If LV would become a "family friendly" town ... it would die I think. It is the "Sin" that attracts the flies, not the "family playground" part.

Families can play in Disney Land ... let the adults play in LV :D

Have been to Vegas numerous times, the last time last winter, its a great place if you go with the mind set that it is not Disneyland, and never will be. There were always attractions for kids and families, but, that is not its bread and butter and really they do not try to hide that fact. It would not be on the top of my list should I want a family vacation. For one thing you never really know what you are walking into unless you do research first. There are always a lot of conventions, and when I went once the NBA AllStar game happened to be on that weekend. Talk about insanity, I have never seen so many people on the streets, most with terrible dress attire and drunkeness, but I honestly believe most of the worst were out of towners.

Quite honestly, I would not have been at all surprised to see almost anything when I first went there. It was actually tamer than friends had built it up to be. It was not as bad as some large cities I have been to in some respects, especially after living and working near Detroit for many years. I can imagine it would be a huge culture shock to some though like the original poster, especilly if they are not used to that type of environment. I enjoy going and hope it is not getting too much worse.

I do think the point is being missed here somewhat.

It's not what they're selling, it's the constant harassment and being approached every few feet is the problem.

Yes, Las Vegas can have a sleazy side, I do not have a problem with that, despite what some may think !

Vegas is what you make of it. It can be Family Friendly, or not.

You can catch the free shows, do a bit of gambling in a high-class casino, enjoy inexpensive buffets literally fit for a King.... or you can visit the Bunny Ranch just outside of Vegas.

If you want to avoid the whore houses, a bit of advanced planning is needed.

These two posts have it right by a connection: Vegas was run by the Mafia until the 80's, when the corporate culture and the Mafia's own lack of discipline finally moved them out.
... eventually made Vegas the Mob-free high-dollar corporate theme park that it is today.

Ah, what would J. Edgar say ? "There is no mob".

Wonder where the non-existant mob is these days ?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gary_Weiss

"Weiss wrote a Business Week cover story called "The Mob on Wall Street", published in December 1996, which described how New York's organized crime families had infiltrated brokerage firms in New York and Florida. The article named the firms and crime figures involved, and described how they defrauded thousands of investors around the country. This story preceded the June 2000 arrest of 120 Mafia figures for stock fraud by almost four years."

Of course there's books:

"Born to Steal, published in 2003, reports on a Mafia-linked stockbroker named Louis Pasciuto. The book describes how Wall Street firms were infiltrated by organized crime figures during the 1990s.

Wall Street Versus America, published in April 2006, is described as an "attack, using humor and ridicule" on the morality of Wall Street, its regulators and the financial press. The book is critical of hedge funds, mutual funds, and the Wall Street securities arbitration process, as well as the New York Stock Exchange. The book is also critical of former Securities and Exchange Commission chairmen Arthur Levitt and William H. Donaldson. The book is strongly critical of the campaign against naked short selling, because Weiss believes it threatens the ability of short sellers to deflate pump-and-dump schemes, thus providing cover to the scam artists behind such schemes.

In the book and in articles, Weiss singled out the Bear Stearns securities firm for criticism. In a March 2006 New York Times op-ed piece, Weiss chastised the SEC for what he described as inadequate penalties imposed upon the firm for mutual fund violations.

Weiss's comments on anti-naked-shorting activists has provoked some negative responses, including threats."

Can you connect the dots ?

Well I didn't say the Mob vanished, just that they weren't in Vegas :)

And that's funny, yet makes sense, to think the Mafiosi are out there trying to profit off the worst Wall Street has to offer. Bigger fish in a bigger pond..

Was in Las Vegas in November of 1982.

That sort of behavior was pretty bad back then.

Is it now Better ?

Or even Worse ?

I must say I visited Vegas about 10 years past and I was simply amazed by the whole place. I drove there from Pomona and the trip across was beautiful and flat driving with almost nothing in sight......then out of nowhere is this huge city right in the middle of isolation.

I do not drink nor smoke and really do not gamble much however I had a great time there just looking at everything. It really is a beautiful place if you get past all the drama and lights.

I was amazed at the money in that town and on the outside it looked like wealth everywhere....however I found out that is not exactly true. I did a ride along with the metro police there and learned much about the town. I was shocked to see a short drive out of the city lead to high crime areas and drugs just like any other town. What was amazing to me was the difference a few miles made in the landscape and the atmosphere.

None the less it was a beautiful place to a simple country man like myself and I have no doubt I could live in Nevada and be happy if I were in the right area. I would not want to live in the city part however there were some areas closeby that were simply stunning in beauty. All in all I had a great time there and no I did not visit the Ranch nor any others like it.

Now by Vegas you're /all/ referring to the strip.

Because I have a friend that lives in Vegas, and Vegas is a HUGE place, with just a .tiny. part of it being the strip.

That said, I agree! You can't look up, you especially can't look down...just look straight ahead, and even then you've got to be careful!!

Thanks for that, it clarifies things for me. I'm sure the strip is not a place for young families, and there might be other 'safe' places to go. I haven't been there yet, but I'm sure I will (Bellagios is a must). I'm sure the flyers were annoying.

But If anyone goes to Bali, you get aggressively hassled by people all the time, for you to buy their wares ( I'm not talking sex in this instance - more Batik and t shirts!) even after boting across a large lake to see a remote village, we were set upon by people selling carvings.

Even in London, you can't walk down a shopping street without being accosted with 'chuggers' ( charity muggers) or census takers or by seeing pornographic pictures stuck in EVERY phone box, advertising prostitutes or other 'services'.( Also not fun if your with young kids)

Basically, it's like they're all after our money!!! :grin2:

Hope it didn't spoil your holiday in Vegas too much, Abvidleduk.

Did you gamble?????

Be lucky...

I've been there a few times to attend trade shows, and I've gotta say that other than the adult stuff, walking around the strip feels like walking around inside a giant cartoon. It's amazing and a little weird at the same time.

If you want to get away from the adult stuff, by all means take a short drive out to Red Rock Canyon. It is so completely removed from what everyone thinks of "Vegas" that you'll realize what a small part of Nevada the Strip really is, and it's a great way to regain your perspective, as well as see some beautiful scenery.

Reading this thread reminds me of one of my first trips to the USA and walking down the street of a major city at lunch time. There was a "tout" selling the virtues of a certain girly bar at lunch time. He was set upon by a couple of people who asked him how he could sell sex in the street and reminding him of some scripture reference. His response: "It's my job and I'll do it as best I can!" Got to admit I was impressed.

By whom?.... The religious nut-jobs or the sleazy porn-peddler?

It's not like being a porn-peddler is a high-paying career. If the guy had some morals, he could get a job as a waiter or construction worker; and easily make more money.

If the religious nut-jobs would use some different tactics, they might actually get folks to respect them.

NYC has a nice mix of both types.

Vegas has always been like that... Next time i go i'm going to start collecting the cards.. maybe me and the guys can trade then back and forth. (kidding)

It can be family friendly, you just gotta watch out where you go. Any place that lets you walk around outside and legally drink will be a risk to take kids to. It's better during the day, at night is when the crazies come out.

Sad thing is that i bet my 9yr old son has seen worse things on TV.. :ironic:

Best to avoid the Fremont street experience if you have kids. That part of Vegas has a good collection of pimpers and pick-pockets.
