After having seen a minimagled 2aa in action, I am thinking of changing the stock bulb in my dorcy for a LED.

The problem is, I have no modding experience and do not feel like buying anything online. Does anyone know if a magled upgrade modufle will fit into my old 2D aluminum dorcy?

Probably not, the barrel on the MagLED module is significantly larger than that of a standard PR bulb.

thats what MagLED failed to realize is that creating a lamp specfically for the maglite means they just lost customers who wants to use them for the PR based flashlights thats more common than maglites

TEKTITE makes several versions of PR based Luxeon lamps
whats better? a tektite sales representative is on the forum in case you have questions ;)

I guess that's a different perspective that doesn't appear to have been presented before. :)

I guess you've seen pictures of the insides of one of those modules haven't you? I'm not sure how they would have made that module smaller. I think a lot of the direct drive modules can be made to be as small as the PR barrel though. I don't think it was ever Mag's intent to sell LED modules to go into any lights other than their own. If they had, I would think they would use a separate branding from the Mag name. And for those, they could even import them entirely from China (not that I think there aren't imported components in the MagLED modules.)

Mudx2 - Funny you should ask. Mirage_Man cut a Dorcy 2D down for me just last night. At this point it is an empty host. However, I plan to mod it, and understand that a Mag D HS can be made to fit. Initially I had planned to use one of the PR base LEDs for this mod. The ArcMania PR bulb works, but the output is not adequate. The EverLED base is too large as is the Mag drop-in. In addition, the light has a plastic bulb holder that no doubt would melt over time even with the basic bulb. Interestingly though the plastic holder slips into a nice, albeit thin, HS. The HS has threads and screws into the body, leaving a protruding lip at the top - much like a hotlips HS.

I have a Snap-On Tools 2D that is designed much the same way. Milkyspit modded that light with a cree sitting on top of the light's stock HS. He used a Dorcy board out of the 1xAAA. On 2D alkys the light throws as well or better than most of my lights. Sorry for the long story. I don't have the pics to add, but will ask MM if he can post for me. Good luck. KK

Looking at the Dorcy website, I see an LED upgrade for Dorcy lights -- Dorcy LED upgrade. The packaging looks suspiciously like the Variable Power L.E.D upgrade that is now available at Sears -- Sears part number 3493044. I think the Sears LED upgrade will work fine in your Dorcy 2D. I have one in my Maglite 2D and it's very good -- nice and bright, good beam quality, etc.

TekTite advertisestheir PR based bulbs to include a step up circuit, and since Im familiar with using the everled, I know its entirely possible to shove a circuit in that little space...

the ultimate problem that concerns me [as much as I wanted to convert all my household 2Ds into led] theres very little heatsinking for the LEDs to perform well...

I drilled a cheap evereadys reflector bigger to cram in a magled....the LED had a great time before the reflector begins to soften:ohgeez:

GeorgePaul, thanks for the tip, I'll be in Sears this weekend ;)

Thanks for all the info - I totally forgot about the plastic bulb holder. It would be a mess to clean if it melted.

As for the dorcy LED upgrade, I'll check the Sears sometime. I noticed it on the dorcy website a while ago, but I'm worried I'll have trouble finding it in Montreal. If I do find one, I just hope it doesn't run too hot

I may just give up and get a magled 2aa or 2d instead. The 2aa is nice, but needs two hands to twist on. The 2d is a winner in terms of runtime, but the initial dropoff seems disappointing.

Here's a picture of the shortened black 2D Dorcy I did for Nebula.

Nebula's right in that it shouldn't be too terribly difficult to make a heat sink fit these lights. I will post whatever it is I come up with when I do if you're interested?
