Hi everyone,

I stumbled across this awesome forum when researching flashlights, so I thought I would ask the experts ...

I am a police officer in Canada, in a rural town with many open fields / wooded areas. I am looking for the best possible secondary flashlight to carry on my duty belt at all times. I need something that is powerful, preferably adjustable lumes, is friggan bright, has good battery life with the option to buy rechargables, and will be up to the task / duties of a police officer. I am in the $100 range preferably, but open to suggestions if there is an amazing light out there for me ...

I've been looking at and comparing the new Fenix TK11, Gladius Night-Ops, and the Surefire 6P.

Any suggestions are MUCH appreciated!

I'd suggest either the TK11, Dereelight CL1H, or a Surefire 6P with a good drop-in.

TK11 because it is pretty simple to use.

CL1H because it accepts P60 drop-ins(there are many available and the light will be easy to upgrade). It also takes 18650 batteries.

6P because it is well known and also takes P60 drop-ins.

But in a wooded area you might need a throwy light. In that case, something like the Dereelight DBS might be a good choice.

How far would the beam have to reach?

:welcome:

Thanks for the reply, to be honest I don't know anything about lights, or P60 drop-ins for that matter, lol. I would prefer a good factory light right out of the box. I really have no idea how far the beam would have to reach. I will be looking for a larger search light later on though, maybe a Streamlight SL-20, or Strion for my searchlight / primary flashlight. The light i'm looking for now should be a smaller, best all-around carry light. I came across the Tiablo A9 in another search just to add to the confusion!

I'm just a noob but in my opinion the TK11 will just do simply fine. Its easy to use, bright, trusty, you can use rechargeables.
P.S I would love to have your job! :p

The TK11 or TK10 should be good. Pretty simple to use and should be pretty tough. 8% off coupon at Fenix Store(if you buy from there) is "CPF8".

Thanks again for the replies and hospitality everyone, I think I'm just going to get the Fenix and not worry about the rest ... Now I have to figure out which batteries to get ... suggestions on best 18650 rechargables?

I work in law enforcement and have had better luck with Wolf Eyes than Fenix. You might consider the Wolf Eyes Sniper from Pacific Tactical.

For my patrols I'd go for Malkoff M60 and a C3 or 9P. Take the 3 cell for the longer runtime, you never know how much or how long you will be out of your unit using the light. A 3 cell light is still very handy IMO.
But TK11 will do almost as well I think, certainly cheaper price.
:welcome:

You gotta use AW's 18650 cells! The best by far.

+1 For AW's 18650cells!
or AW's R123A

:)
I think I'm on the same level as the OP when it comes to torches. I chose the TK10 because ease of use, price and its just a damn great light!

Last night, I went to the front of my house and turned the fenix on turbo mode and shined it towards my house. It lit up the front like day time!

+1 for TK11. Having the two modes should really be helpful. One for general use and long runtime, one to really "reach out and touch someone" when you need it.

You can get the light, batteries, and charger all with 8% off from Fenix-Store.com

And even if you don't like it, you can easily return it or sell it back here for about what you payed for it.

Ok, I went ahead and ordered the Fenix for now. I've never been much of a flashlight guy and always used the stuff the department had laying around, so I'm sure this will be better than my current light. So I should go ahead and order the charger / batteries from fenix as well? Or go with something off Ebay?

Go with Fenix and get a good deal with the CPF8 code and get great service with all your purchases. Fleabay will leave you hanging if there is a problem. Fenix-Store will always help you out.

haha, there's so many different batteries, who knew flashlights were so complex? I sure as hell didn't ... Which batteries should I be looking for on their website? Looks like the TK11 can take many different kinds ...

Hey War0088,

My suggestion to you would to be look at a combination of lights. We work in shitty environments up here in the great white north, and believe me there is nothing worse than having a light go out when your 500m from the PC in the middle of the forest looking for some guy. Most people on here preach the one is none two is one approach to lights for duty situations, I also follow this path.

The lights I would recommend for you a a Pila GL4 with the 550 lumen bulb if running primaries or a Lumensfactory EO-450 Bulb should you want to run rechargeable cells. I run my GL4 with a Red LED tail cap, makes walking around at night pleasant with out being blinding and makes you harder to see. Note this is alot of light out the fornt end of the flashlight, and may indeed be too much for many interior room/car searches or attempting to serve a traffic ticket (white paper + bright light + night= cop and client whom cant see). Also note, with high output bulbs the lights dim and then just go out, its not like the old Mag lights where they dim to pure crap first. The light goes from still useable to, well, off very quickly at the end of battery life. The second light is a Pila GL2, I just have the normal forward clicky tail switch in mine. I suggest in this light running a Wolf Eye's LED module at around 250 bulb lumens. Great for everything else. Note both of these are capable of running 18650 cells from AW or from Pila and Pila makes a super good charger for them. I always suggest running protected cells for these applications, you don't have time to sit and watch the charger at work, and your not going to remember to check your lamp for heat when trying to find X-Y-Z in the bush :)poof: = :thumbsdow ).

The GL4 works great for out door or big area's and even some room searches, the GL2 w/LED works great for most duty work, but just doesn't have the throw of the GL4 for real distance.

I constantly get comments from all the guys on my watch about my lights, even the guys whom cary higher end products like surefire's on their belts. My lights are consistently brighter than everyone else's. The only caveat I didn't meet was your $100 price-point, but the GL2 with LED is close if you run on Primaries. The rechargeable cells are really going to set you back!

The Pila's are literally built like a tank, the only complaint I have had about them is that their anodized finish is fairly weak and seems to scratch easily even in normal ware and tare.

Should you have any more questions send me a private message and Ill send you a groupwise name so you can send me a very sneaky internal message. Also I'm surprised Pete B. hasn't been here yet, he's another stetson wearer whom gave me alot of my knowledge.
