Hi... I am a relative newbie in the world of flashlights, but I thought that a Mag mod would be a good addition to my budding collection.

I am looking to put together something that's relatively inexpensive, and would run for ~1+ hour on a 2-3D Mag (6-9 NiMH AAs), and put out 500+ lumens.

I would like to emphasize reliability and long bulb life, so I really don't need 1000 lumens if it's going to instaflash every other time.

If you guys can help me with a shopping list for the mod, I'd greatly appreciate it.

Thanks in advance.

How much money is inexpensive? Do you have any parts or mag bodies already? If you use a 2D setup then a ROP is a good starter project. You can find ROP threads on the incan. forum. It is basically a Pelican 3854 Big D bulb running on 6 nimh AA batteries. The bulb package comes with a HI and LOW power bulb. With the Low bulb you will not get the lumen you want but definitely the runtime. With the Low bulb, I believe you can use the stock reflector and lens but you might want to double check this. The HI bulb will give you the lumen you want but not 1 hour+ runtime. With the HI bulb you will definitely need a metal reflector and borofloat lens. I am currently running a ROP HI on 2C lithium AW batteries with a heavy stipple reflector. It's a beautiful flood beam in an easy to carry package.

Borofloat lens and Pelican bulbs can be found at lighthound.com. Reflectors are being sold by Fivemega here:

I have the 2D ROP, I got some help to make one. This is some of the message I recieved by a fellow member here;

"....Puts out about 1200 lumens at the bulb which reduces greatly out the front of the light to about 550 to 800 lumens. I think the low output makes about 500 or 600 bulb lumens which would make about 250 to 300 lumens out of the light. These are all estimates from the CPF collective. (People with way more technical knowlege than me about these things.) I don't think anyone has paid for the actual lab testing. I can promise you it will not disappoint for the money invested. Add the fact that it runs rechargeable batts and it pays for itself in short order.

**There are other guys using lithium-Ion batteries to make the light smaller. There are many saftey issues with Li-Ion compared to NiMh. Also I think you get less run time per charge with the Li-Ion.**

Now the shopping list:

http://candlepowerforums.com/vb/show...6&page=1&pp=30

From this thread you will need:

6AA to 2D adapter $37

Dual function aluminum reflector $25 each (with
purchase of battery holder)
(Your choice: very light orange peel (VLOP)Tighter
focus for more throw more rings/holes when not focus
tightly)
or
(Medium Orange Peel (MOP) Smoother more difuse beam.
Still decent throw.))

Boro lens $5.50 each

The bulbs can be had here since he is sold out in that
thread:

http://www.lighthound.com/index.asp?...OD&ProdID=1070

Lastly you will need atleast 6 AA NiMh batteries(and a
charger). Any type will work with the low output bulb.
For the high output bulb these are recommended since
the amperage draw can be in excess of 5 amps:

http://www.amondotech.com/index.asp?...OD&ProdID=1176

Those are supposed to maintain voltage at up to 18
amps.

I have dealt with all of these places and Fivemega
before and I had no problems getting everything from
them.

Then you just need any 2D maglite. Take out the stock
parts and replace with the upgrades."

Hope it helps!

9AA (2700mAh) can reliabily power up an WA1166 for more than an hour with over 600 bulb lumens.
chance of instaflash with most of overdriven bulbs like 1331 or 1185 with this set up is greater, therefore not reliable.
