Man dies from battery explosion in cell phone

"Local reports said that this was the ninth recorded cellphone explosion in China since 2002"

out of how many million n millions of chinese cells phones and batteries sold each year?

not too much to get excited about - your more likely to be stuck by lightning - but, just the same I wouldn't want to be the one that it happens to.

I need to build an ejector on my belt carrier using spare CO2 cartridges...:D

the worst I've seen is DOA charger/phone units from the box...lets hope thats the worst I will ever actually see

The last time such a story went around, the guy was killed by a construction worker mishandling a crane, and the cell phone was used to try to cover it up.

Come on people..... did you really think this was for real?

Lithium batteries do not truly "explode" ...they flame, but that is it. Put them inside a flashlight and you can build up enough pressure to blow an end off perhaps, but the cells themselves do not "explode". Cylindrical batteries have pressure relief to prevent explosions. Cells like those in a cell phone have a soft shell that can not contain pressure.

Oh yeah, that must be what happened then. :shakehead

I mean who ever heard of Chinese "authorities" altering a story that would have negative trade or other implications?

Those who don't think Lithium batteries don't explode with extreme force need to do a little more research, including on this very forum.

Because the Chinese cell phone battery market is so threatened by western makers that they'd put down their doughnuts and go through all that blackmail/bribing/risk taking trouble, right?

And the fact that he was an amateur attempting to build a gun sounds so much less accident-prone than carrying a phone in your shirt, right?

Or maybe due to the fact that the prismatic cell in his phone was a one in a zillion unlucky malformed one that could actually retain enough pressure to explode, as opposed to the rest of the prismatic cells which can't due to the way they are made?

We might as well call these surprise grenades from now on, eh?

I love the authorities' advice: "avoid long phone conversations".

"Sorry, I have to hang up now my risk of explosion has increased". :poof:

There is a much better chance of battery exploding than a home made gun in China

Imagine that, a chinese homemade gun did what many other chinese made products do. Malfunction.

Yes please do research. There have several "reports" of someone dying from a cell-phone battery explosion, but it always debunked. Prismatic cell construction as is in a cell phone, i.e. light plastic casing, etc. can not contain a very high pressure, even cheapy Chinese ones which are even flimsier than name-brand. Could you get a bit of a pop...yes, but not something that is going to cause explosive damage.

On the lithium primaries we use, I am only aware of one or two "explosions"..... from improperly made cells without venting where the metal case split. Could you call it an explosion.... sure, but even if it happened right next to you, not sure it would do much damage

There was that case of Avestor's batteries, but we are talking something the size of a car-battery in a hard metal case able to contain a huge pressure before rupturing.
