Midnight Sun in the palm of my hand?

Ok, not really.
What I'm looking for in this light:
- compact, 123 based (1 or 2 cell)
- decent output, at least 80 lumen - >100 preferred
(will sacrifice some runtime for higher output)
- awesome throw with just enough spill to light the immediate area
(so I don't step on that timber rattler!)
- under $200

How well does the SF C-2 meet those needs?

Why spend that much money? You can get an excellent 200 lumen multilevel light for less than $100 now. If you don't need more than 100 lumens, there are single AA lights that will do what you want - or even AAA lights.

If you need awesome throw, there are a lot of lights that will outthrow the Surefire C2 in that class now. And many of them twostage, so you'll get both runtime and output.

The Dereelight DBS is probably one of the best throwing stock LED light out right now. The 2SD module would be the brightest(260+ lumen at the LED) but it will only run on a 3.7v battery. The other modules should be over 150 lumen out the front

The WF-600 Q5 would be the cheapest good thrower that will take 2 CR123.

Both should out throw the Surefire C2(3000-4000lux vs. 13000 Lux minimal, the DBS is over 20000 Lux) and be over 100 lumen out the front.

Because of you requirement for "awesome throw" I really think the D-mini is one of your few choices for a single battery light.

As far as two battery lights go, the Lumapower MRV, Diablo A8 and A9, and Dereelight DBS are still the top dogs in the throw department.

With regards to not stepping on Rattlesnakes, a light that thows awesome isn't the best light for seeing snakes near your feet. You might pick a light with more of a floody beam for that purpose, but it won't be an awesome thrower.

I was looking at the D-mini too, but apparantely it doesn't really have a very deep reflector? Did not seem to throw commensurate to it's reflector diameter - or am I wrong?

I like the C1L (blah blah) Q5 and the D-mini.
Between those two, I'm leaning toward the mini.
(it'll fit in my car's console better)

One thing that is great with Dereelight is that they are very easy to upgrade. When there are better emitters or circuits out, you just buy a new pill from them, you don't have to buy an entire new light. Pretty neat IMHO.
