I guess on the bigger mags the threads are all cut on a lathe, but it looks to me like the minimag 2xaa tailcap threads are just a straight 5/8x24 (if I remember correctly). Is this the case? I have one I want to cut down but I don't dare unless I know the threads will work. I found a cheap tap for under 10 bucks, doesn't have to cut much. Post up if you know the answer, I'll have something to work on during my Sunday afternoon :) Thanks

The mini-mag is 28 threads per inch. Also, there is a clear start at the beginning for the seal on the tailcap. I have done a number of these on my lathe with a single point threading tool.

I checked two different samples with a thread pitch gage I have and a lighted inspection magnifier. Unfortunately my gage does not have all the different pitches. My gage was made for identifying Aeroquip hydraulic fittings. A thread gage is flat metal so the actual thread form can be seen. It is difficult to tell what the pitch is when comparing two round threaded objects.

With just a short section of threads 28TPI could be made to work if the threads were loose enough.
