tailcap solutions are tricky.. unless you can get power down around the battery to run the circuit. in which case than it could be possible.. a ribbon cable like what is used to power laptop components etc could be used.. i've seen designs that use this solution..

there are a couple good LDO circuits 'open source' on CPF. evan has one and mr al designed one is used as a 'jumping off' point for the nano project... search 'batteries included' for LDO in the subject.
