Hi peeps this is my first post here and need some help.

I've started to build a dive torch following the modded maglite idea.

the parts I'm using

1 x MR16 50watt
14.4v 9000mah nimh batt pack

now I want to be able to control the levels of light being produced to

10%-50%-100%

I would also like to incorporate this into the project.
If I press and hold the switch for 3-4secs the light will start to flash until pressed again. but my main focus is on the selectable power outputs.

I've done some research and found the light genie project (i cant afford it) so is there any other way of doing this.

many thanks and happy diving

Welcome, but oh boy are you seriously in the wrong league my friend....

It's all about LED's these days...

:welcome:

Go ahead and proceed with this one... Screw a bunch of stuff up and learn how to do it right... Then you can do LED and be really happy.... Good luck on the build!!!

I have never seen an HID dimmable to 10%. Mostly there is only 15 watts between Low and High and that dimmability is incorporated into the ballast. I don't believe this is something you can add on as most ballasts are fully regulated.

I believe the OP was talking about halogen not HID.

Either way forget it and go LED.

I've been looking in too the use off LEDs instead has anyone got plans for controlling to power of the light?
don't fancy blinding my buddy when getting out the water

We have available to us all kind of LED drivers for the job, depending on your budget and specific application. I almost always use LED drivers from TaskLED:
