I've done a bit of research, but it's hard to make sense of it all since there are so many options. This is going to be my first LED light purchase, so I'd really appreciate some recommendations to get me started. I'm looking for a good quality bright light...something that matches these criteria:

1. Good mixture of throw and spill for general use
2. Under $100
3. Pocketable

It doesn't really matter to me whether it is a CR123 or AA light, as they both have their pros and cons. I've been considering one of the Fenix P3D's. Is this a good beginner light? Which is better, the Q5 or RB100?

Also, what's the advantage of a 2 battery light, over a 1, besides the obvious size?

Thanks to anyone who can offer some insight.

Since you're already looking at Fenix, I would suggest the L2D RB100. But that's only because of my preference for AA's over CR123's for rechargables.

I'm playing with 2 P3D (1 Q5, 1 RB100) right now. The P3D would be an excellent first light, probably save you a few upgrades. I personally would not want to pocket anything bigger most of the time.

The dual cell lights can often give you longer runtime. In fact I can't wait to test the custom PEU 3 cell tactical body from Fenix-Store for the P3D. I just got it today; it won't provide any extra lumens, but it will provide extra run time. With lithium lights though a single cell is quite nice, and can be quite powerful (and safer).

My examples of the Q5 and RB100 are basically just different tints for the same output. The Rebel is a much warmer tint, and my Q5 is just a hint of blue in the white. I have a hard time choosing, but I may lean toward the Rebel. The Rebel beam is also just a bit smoother on the white wall tests, but nothing too much to see outside since they both have OP reflectors.

My Q5 seems to have a much lower level low setting than the Rebel. I think they might have changed the levels in the current Q5. I'm tempted to ask. I really like the low-low of the Q5.

I would suggest you also consider the single cell CR123A P1D-CE / P1D-CE-(Q5). A fabulous pocket light.

The truth is, your criteria is so wide many lights would fit in there.

Good luck, let us know how your first purchase goes.

Thanks for the advice everyone! I'll probably go with with Q5 soon. Any recommendations for an online place to order batteries? Is there a big difference in brands?
