I have an older Light & Motion Arc HID headlight that I use mostly for longer distance rides to work in the winter months. But it's also great for days when I head out for a ride after work too late to get back before sunset. Right now I'm powering the light with a Li-Ion cub battery (3 cell) but the light actually cut out on my last ride. Fortunately I was already off the pitch black path and back onto roads so I could just use my backup helmet light at that time.
I've been looking for the most cost-effective solution for what to do now. The light had a high and low setting of 675 lumen and 550 lumen published and it's bright enough for me not to outride it on a pitch dark path. L&M sells replacement 3 and 6 cell Li-ion batteries for $150 and $220 respectively on their website and I wouldn't need to buy a new charger either.
I found some Li-ion packs at batteryspace.com that have the correct voltage but I would need to rig a proper connector to the light. I have an old NiMH L&M battery that is on its last legs that I could theoretically "rescue" by replacing the cells or cannibalizing the connector for a Li-Ion powerpack but I do appreciate the weather-resistant form factor of the factory L&M packs.
There are some supposedly new batteries on Ebay but at not that great of a discount. There are some of the 9 cell "ultra" li-ion packs but they're fairly scarce.
Would people suggest I buy an additional 3/6/9 cell L&M pack? Try to rig up a home-made pack of some type? Get a replacement light, and if so what kind?
