Novatac 120P mod question?

Just ordered a Novatac 120P and want to upgrade it as I believe 120lumens on a single 123 is not enough :candle: So I was thinking a Cree XP-G would be a nice upgrade.

Question1. Is the Cree XP-G physically bigger than the already installed led?
Question2. Will the Cree XP-G be driven hard enough by the driver installed to achieve atleast 200lumens?
Question3. Where the heck can I get a Cree XP-G not already on pcb board?

Thanks in advance,
-Ionizedsky

Thanks, I had read this one before and was looking for it again.
Still need to know where to find XP-G?
What epoxy should I use to adhere the led to the heat sink?
Where do I get glow powder from?

Thanks again,
-Ionizedsky

It can be done with not much difficulty

See here

Member Nailbender has some for sale in the B/S/T section
Arctic alumina thermal epoxy for the LED
V10 GITD powder from Glowinc

BTW if you posted your questions in the "Homemade and Modified" section
of the forum, you would have gotten a better response ;)

Thanks, I could have sworn I was in the Homemade and Modified section, that is twice this week I have posted in wrong sections  Oh well thanks very much for your help.

I'll move it to H&M for you.

Much appreciated.

Well I have the Novatac 120P and some XP-Gs on the way, just need to order a couple more things and hopefully I will be able to venture into my first Mod :candle: Stay tuned...

Well wouldn't yeah know, my Novatac 120P arrived this afternoon. Little intimidated by the user interface but excited to figure it out :grin2:

Ive done this swap and it is great.
Me too. :D

I was looking at the new RA lights and they just didn't do it for me, I did not like the step down from 170 lumens to 120 lumens after the first 10 seconds and I have a 2XXXX NovaTac 120T which is a very nice light but it lacks the throw that I wanted. So I dug out my near mint HDS 42 Basic XRGT and sent Will a PM to see what we could come up with. :naughty:

After talking with Will I realized that the smooth reflector was going to give me the throw that I wanted so on to the emitter. :) After some batting around some different emitters we came up with the hard to find K2 TFFC UWOE Bin and Will had only one left so I took it.

Will kept me in the loop with all the mods and his communication was great! His work is very clean and precise. Today when the lights arrived I put the put the HDS up against my NovaTac 120T and it simply left the 120T in the dust. It has the throw that I wanted along with a very well blended hotspot with no rings or artifacts (the hotspot is strong). HDS UI with power and the great clip that we all loved. I am glad I supercharged the HDS rather than going the RA route, I am sure the RA is a fine light and I respect Henry as I have met him several times and played with the RA 170 but the supercharged HDS Basic 42 XRGT just does it for me. I am sure this thing is going over 200 lumens.

Now the hard choice, the datkzero Longbow or the darkzero HDS!

Thanks Will for a job well done!

Dan,

Do you know what type and where the reflector was obtained from? Please excuse my ignorance here as I am newer to the modding and homemade forum, but who is Will? What type of run time you getting on max? Did you have a thread of this light some photo comparisons?

Thanks!

+1

Just a guess so please correct me if I am wrong. The reflector COULD be
a IMS reflector, member Photofanatic has them for sale over at the Marketplace.

Reading this thread has given me the urge to swap the emitter in my 120T
a K2 TFFC to a Cree XPG R5  :D

Will is darkzero on CPF. We used the stock HDS reflector because I wanted throw and it worked great. The runtime is basically the same because we did not change the drive circuit. The light started out as a 42XRGT (eXtra Runtime Guaranteed Tint).

I wouldn't do that, I don't think you will gain anything and your K2 is the toughest LED out there. It will take things that other LED's will not and will give you a lot more throw than the XP-G.

What's your opinion on what a Nailbender Linger special x2 XP-G for a swap into the 120P?

Sorry to hijack, have a similar question...how about a K2 TFFC with an optical lens in the Novatac, has anyone done this? Will? Looking for similar throw as a Cree Surefire L1. I can't seem to find any suitable lens for the K2 TFFC.

That is perfectly okay I was actually thinking that while I was sitting at work in the daylight looking at my Malkoff M60 equipped Surefire C2 and was thinking what about an Optic...?
