This is my first cree mod and I am more than happy with the result. If you know this light that I use as a host its a regulated 1 watt early version of luxeon I. It has an ok output with a slight tint and a good runtime of 7 hrs. to 50% as reviewed in flashlight reviews and puchased from GoldenGadgets. The mod was just a direct star swap and super glued the metal plate that was used as the heatsink/base for the old star.But after the upgrade I was surprised with the output, the hotspot is twice as bright and big with a very good warm tint. The side spill is greatly increased and usable, but the only challenged is the hotspot has some slight rings but not too bad.
I have tried a lot of things to fix it and came up with a great and simple idea of just putting a piece of invisible scotch tape at the bottom hole of the reflector( sticky side towards the reflector)Problem solved ,the hotspot is now nice and smooth without loosing much throw. Overall I am so happy with my mod. The output is comparable with my Kenbar light from DX, but with much more side spill. I did an informal runtime and got around 10hrs. and was running six AAA on series parallel ,another bonus on this light is it can also be run on just three AAA with a 5hr runtime. Btw the light is still available at GoldenGadgets ebay for $9.99. Cheap and a good host for a cree mod.
