According to LuxLuther's destructive bulb test the Osram 64432 should be able to handle 5 IMR cells easily. The test shows his sample good all the way to 23.5 volts. Five IMR cells fully charged don't go above 21 volts (5 X 4.2) so I thought the combo would work. The first bulb blew immediately so I double checked everything. Verified the bulb and the test info. Thought I might have received a bad bulb. Same results with the second bulb.

I drive 12 volt 2000 hour MR16 bulbs with five IMR cells with zero failures so far. This is a 4000 hour 12 volt bulb.

Looks like the quality has dropped off. The package claims the bulbs were made in Germany. Anybody have a similiar experience?

One thing to remember, is that LuxLuthor's testing is done as a soft start set up.

Got it. I've been running the 1185 using three Li-Ions in series and it seems that would put me much closer to the :poof: threshold. Obviously each bulb has it's own characteristics and my generalization was wrong.

Can the stock Mag switch handle that kind of current?
I would need to use the AW switch or perform the mod you have in your link right?

Not for long, you will need either of the two or a JimmyM mosfet regulator, which in actuality you would need 6 IMR's to regulate it.

I have 2 64440 bulbs on hand. Will they take 5 IMRs without a soft start?

Yes

ditto that! 64458 is my favorite bulb thus far for 5 IMR cells.

+1 from me too. I have a 64458 in a regulated light running at 20.2V and I have another 64458 in a 4D light running from 5 x IMR 26500 cells through an AW soft start switch. I have yet to blow one of these bulbs (both my lights are soft start though).

I've used both bulbs (64458 and 64440 IRC) without softstart and 5 IMR 18650 cells. I upgraded the stock mag switch with a 10A switch. You will love a 2.5" throwmaster or 3" head with these large osram bulbs.

Do a search here for Judco.

I know I did an expose post with photos and links for it. I mounted one in the switch compartment of a D Mag, removed the blue center doohickey.

Do you have any good beam shots comparing those two FM heads when using some of the big Osrams? I have a 2.5" Throwmaster and I agree that with the 64440 IRC, you get a really nice beam. The Throwmaster produces a nice, round hot spot from the 440's axial filament. The Throwmaster also definitely focuses the beam from a 64623 much tighter compared to a basic KD v3.1 15mm opening OP reflector.

Do you think that the 3" FM3 series heads are even better than the Throwmaster?

Thanks.

I actually don't have time to look for it at the moment, so you may end up finding it first, but I believe FM has stated that the Throwmaster is best for the 623. Hopefully memory isn't failing me there.

Hi Justin

Unfortunately, I do not. I don't own any of those beautiful 3" heads because I'm not fond of the larger circumference of "D" size mags. (I only own "C" size ones :D) From beamshots I have seen, and posts that I've read, the larger 3" reflector does a better job of throwing. Here's a great thread by Chodes: http://www.candlepowerforums.com/vb/showthread.php?t=208688 He compares the stock 2" reflector with 2.5" throwmaster and 3" FM3V2

Chodes posted the comparison beamshots you're looking for back in 2008.

Yeah, unfortunately Chodes' beamshots leave out the Mag623 with the FM3V-2 and he never got to the Mag440 at all.

Justin, do me a favor...give me the length of the Ax filament of the 64440. I don't have any of those at hand. Is it longer than the filament of the 458?

These days my regulated incans are mostly 623 in short hosts and 633 in 3D hosts so sometimes I find it hard to keep track of all the various under 50 watt bulbs that can be pushed hard.

There are plenty of 623 Throwmaster vs. Delgi or FM 3 inch head beamshots but they are peppered in threads that a direct search might not pick up.

Over the years I've tried to either thread subscribe or bookmark certain high power bulb beamshot posts but most of the bookmarks were lost when a lightning strike fried half of the electronics here.
