I live 30 miles outside of town, so it's nice to keep essential stuff on hand rather than grind to a halt because of a missing piece.

I'm just getting into this flashlight and laser mod hobby. My first projects are converting various light/laser combos to IR, for use with NV.

Can you guys help me locate some good parts assortments?

Resistors - I'm thinking some .5 and 1W assortments. Maybe others? Carbon film or metal film?

Pots - is there such a thing as a few common pots that are handy to keep around?

Capacitors?

Basic surface mount bits?

Other recommended bits?

I'm not looking to break the bank here. I just want to lay in some common sense stuff so it's handy when i need it. THANKS!

Your question is almost too open ended for us to give you reasonable feedback/suggestions. Discrete resistors and caps to do "what"? Are these parts (specially resistors) carrying any significant current? That determines their wattage ratting. Value wise, they go into less than 1 Ohm, and up in the Megaohms range - huge range. Their physical size goes up as their wattage rating goes higher.

If you just want generic stuff "just in case", Radio Shack or Fry's should have resistor "kits". For the caps it is harder, since their physical volume is directly proportional to their voltage rating and operating temperature - so with caps you have more variables to consider.

And this above is just for through hole parts. Surface mount parts almost requires special soldering equipment/tips, so it is more complicated due to their tiny size and since they tend to "float" in their pads with nothing to keep them in pace.

not knowing exactly what you need I'll recommend what I use and need.

Resistors - 0.1-5 Ohms 5W ceramic. 10-50K Ohms

Pots - 0-10K, 0-20K, 0-50K

Capacitors - NONE

Basic surface mount bits - Ceramic isolators. metcal solder iron ...

Other recommended bits? - more searching / reading

Thanks for the feedback guys.

I'm reading a few hours every night, moving up the curve.

I've been a noob at many things over the years, but I'll say, this IC hobby takes a while to get rolling. :)
