What do I need? I found some D cell Nimh batteries but what is the suggested mah. Remember I am a New guy trying his first flashlight build. Links to parts would be nice. I will be doing this with a 6 D cell M*G. Parts, Advice, Suggestions and flashlight related info will all be very helpful.

Steel85, I built a 6D Mag ROP, so I hope I can help you here.

Firstly, the capacity of the cells does not matter that much, as long as they are at least 1500mAh for good runtime. What matters is QUALITY. My original ROP was built using Uniross 2600 NiMH D-cells and they were UTTERLY USELESS. After about three uses, some of the cells went bad and would not hold much charge at all. Being that they had the same capacity as the AA cells, I guess they were repackaged AA cells, with poor soldering on the internals. Within a month, I had replaced all 6 cells under warranty.

As for other parts, you need the following...

Bulb, standard PR-base

Glass window (stock plastic will melt, and is just ugly anyway)

Aluminium reflector (stock plastic one will melt, and is ugly too)

Ideally, for a nice smooth beam and the ROP bulbs, you want the 8.38mm MOP reflector. However, it looks like these are currently unavailable. You could use one from Kai Domain, but being that these are a rip-off from FiveMega's design, I will not endorse them, nor provide a link.

:welcome:

omg, thanks you mikesalt, i never wanted to bother trying to build an ROP cos could not be bothered to read up, you just provided all the links i need..:D

What is a Good quality battery to go with? I see that MOP means Medium Orange peel also I see a smooth reflector. What's the difference?

This is my first day on this forum and already I got the bug. :twothumbs

You are very welcome. The ROP is a very easy build and very pleasing. I would actually recommend you check out the 6AA -> 2D adapter by FiveMega...

I have this in my 2D ROP, which I EDC in my rucksack. You never know when you may need 700 torch lumens of incandescent goodness. And, with the fast-charge option, charging can take as little as an hour (any faster is dangerous to Eneloops)

I have heard that TenErgy are good cells. My good friend Essexman built one using them and I have heard no complaints. Should have a HUGE runtime too. You may also want to consider the adapter above because good quality AA cells are easier to come by. (requires 2D host though)

Smooth reflectors throw the furthest but you get rings and artifacts in the beam. Medium Orange Peel puts out the same amount of light, but it throws slightly less. The big advantage is that the beam is practically flawless and very usable.

Thank you guys so much. I am ready to started building when I get the money for the parts. :twothumbs

I made mine with the 6D host and used 10,000mAh cells and a reflector from LightEdge which seems to have disappeared. Works like a charm with a MOP reflector to get rid of the nasty filament pattern made with a smooth reflector. The sandwich shoppe should have them as well. I use a Vanson smart charger for the D cells to keep them happy. Seems well so far. Its a blast when people realize their hand is getting warm when they put it in the beam.

Are you going the 6D or 2D route? The 2D route is more expensive, but the parts are transferrable from your 6D ROP, should you wish to change to the smaller format at a later time.

My 6D ROP was recently completed, I'm using the Tenergy cells hot off the charger ( 808M ) with no problems. It's output finally matches it's size.

I am going use the 10000 mah cells. I found some that were 11000mah but they are 28.00 each.

Our 6d rop runs on alkalines. It's been going strong for months on the same batteries. I'm guessing there has to be some voltage drop from resistance. It's a great cheap light. Some day she'll get some better batteries, but for now it's the behind the front door light :D

If you're really running off alkalines, then you're missing out a LOT. Those cells would barely hold 1V for a couple seconds under 4+ amps.

I'm surprised you haven't flashed the bulb... with alkalines that would put the light at 9v
