i heared an friend say that you had to sharpen an recurve blade from the tip to the handle in stead of from the handle to the tip. :thinking:is this true? i dont know an thing about recurves

I don't think it make a difference, either which direction you sharpen in, or if it's a recurve or not.

Only reason I can think of is if you sharpen handle to tip and you are not careful, the tip can slid off stone and round the tip.

The only issue on sharpening recurves I know is that you do not sharpen them on flat stones.

You can sharpen them which ever way you feel comfortable. I've tested angling the burr going forward (tip \\\\\\\ back) from back to front (tip /////// back)... Sometimes on certain cutting tasks, it will preform in a way you like such as pulling or pushing but generally, you won't notice a difference. (tip |||||| back) performs well.

Only time I notice direction of burr while cutting is with tomatoes and fish. Both my tomato and sashimi knife are (tip \\\\\\ back) oriented for a pulling cut. Lots of variables too.

(Things knife makers do when bored beyond stiff and wondering what-if...)

Ceramic sticks work well. You can sharpen them on a flat stone that isn't to wide. The good old leather strop with a compound does well too...provided the edge is not have a kink or is damaged.

I agree. Have you checked the Spyderco Sharpmaker. It's a really good system for all types of blades.
