After shooting and skinning my first black bear, my knife proved to be next to useless ( a home-made drop-point). My guide used his older model 103 Buck Skinner and it was amazing- held an edge long, and very useful shape. So now I wonder whether the new model 103 Buck Skinner is using the same steel, or can another brand of skinner be found with s30v steel for a reasonable price?

Since this is for relatively specialized use, you might just get a commercial fixed blade knife from a resturant supply store. I got no-name one many years ago that has served me very well. Fairly soft stainless with a white plastic handle. Cost like $6 in the late 60's.

And don't hesitate to use a steel as you work -- makes it lots easier and safer if you keep your blade sharp. If you ever get a chance, visit a game processing plant and watch the pros work.

Thanks for the good ideas guys! I will check out the Marples and the Kalinga. As I have only got two animals in 10 years... Visiting the processing plant is a good idea too. thanks.

How about Bark River Bullnose Skinner? It's a lot more expensive, but Bark River makes very nice knives. I would classify them as semi-custom. The link I posted is not the cheapest, so you could shop around. I have a handful of bark river knives and they're all solid.

Here's another interesting one, available in two different laminated steels including the SGPS stuff. I didn't think much of it at first, but that nasty edge kinda grows on you.
