I'm thinking of modding an SST emitter into one of these:

Planning for little or no optic/reflector for a short range Wall o' Light. Will 3x 6000 mAH C NiMH direct-drive an SST-90 well? Or would an SST-50 be more practical? (and less exciting ) How about D NiMH?
Reasons for C cells:
1. Extra length allows a bigger heat sink slug to mount the emitter on.
2. I already have a set of C cells, lightly used but over 2 years old.
Reason for D cells:
1.
2. Better run time, although my air consumption is not great. Most dives last only 45' or less anyway, so if the light is fading after 30', the party's over anyway and switching to a smaller backup light is OK. Standard night dive procedure is carry 2 lights, of course a CPFer carries 4!
3. The ocean is a VERY effective heat sink, so the housing will never get hot and maybe a short heat sink is sufficient. I'm willing to limit use in air if Ds are needed to drive it hard.
(Suggestions for other emitters, e.g. multiple MCE, for this application also welcome)
