SST-90 in Mag 4D?

Hi All, been lurking around here for a while and spending a small fortune in off-the-shelf lights... now I think it's time to look at mods.

I scored a couple of 4D LED Mags today in the winter sales at half price so have some nice new hosts to play with!

Being the noob that I am, I am thinking of an SST-90 in one of my 4D's using a Britelumens heatsink and reflector. I want to use 4 x NiMH hybrid cells which I can buy locally and they are rated at 8000mAh each. (D NiMH's are 1.2v each yes?)

That's where I come to a halt and despite much searching and reading the options and amount of info here are somewhat bewildering :duh2:

I would like to use some kind of driver, preferably a three stage H-M-L but have no idea what I am looking for or even if the light I am proposing will even work with the emitter and power source I have chosen. Bear in mind I am in the UK so parts are not as easy or quick to obtain as they are for you lucky USA dwellers. I can design and build a PCB from scratch if given a schematic if necessary but I am new to optoelectronics and SMD's.

Can you experts hereabout guide a new guy to his first mod please?

Haven't mucked with SST-90 yet myself, but I hear they generally do all right DDed off 4xNiMH C cells -- 4xD might or might not overdrive. I'd use a d2flex to get multi-mode -- not quite the 3-mode you mentioned, but either 5-level (IIRC) or continuously variable, with a really usable UI in either case.

As for the potential for overdrive with 4xD, it's not really a big deal; I have an XR-E running off an IMR 26700 with a d2flex, and while it significantly overdrives on high, I just set it to start at ~75%, and don't ramp up to blue-shifting 100% for extended periods.

Thanks Benson, good info there. I shall start searching for d2flex...
