I have a scrap cell phone car charger wtih a 34063AP1 IC chip in it, a current limit capable, variable voltage DC-DC switch-mode converter.
The secondary was set to 5.1v and output current was limited to 0.9A. With the output shorted, input current was 0.1A, which mean its doing real well as a switching converter. If it was a linear converter, it would be drawing 0.9A from input as well.
This thing has potential.
