Take your passports, since 911 it's become a bit more challenging to get back into the US with just your driver's license. Depending on where you cross, the inspector's mood, etc., YMMV but the last time I crossed the border with just a driver's license there was no problem going into Canada, but I was delayed for a while and scolded for not having my passport when returning to the US.

I noticed several mentions of West Edmonton Mall in earlier posts. While WEM is a notiable landmark worth visiting and experiencing, it's not the only mall in Edmonton. As a matter of fact, there are malls all over Edmonton. though WEM does have it's own hotel, amusement park, and other unique attractions. Don't be disappointed if the stores look no different than what you might find in a mall in the U.S. though (applies to all the malls.) Also notable is that you'll find casinos (full blown, not just slots) in many of the Edmonton malls (a place for one spouse to blow the paycheck, while the other spends the mortgage payment :) ). A nice thing about the Province of Alberta (and it's southern neighbor, the state of Montana; no provincial/state sales tax!)

Oh, in addition to being Canada's oil province, Alberta is also Canada's beef province. And because of one or two mad cow scares hurting their exports, beef is pretty plentiful, you'll want to take advantage of the bounty and enjoy some while you're up there.

Good point. We used to call them "mall stores" (chain stores that all malls have). WEM used to have a hologram store which I loved to visit. Don't know if it's still there.

Hey guys we made it back home on July 28th...I've just been a little slow in checking the forums. We rode 5630 miles (13 state and 4 provinces) and had a great time. Thanks for all the tips. We were able to use our drivers license and a birth certificate to get in/out of the country. On Jan 07, a passport will be required. Man, we had terrible heat in Canada, just like at home :) We didn't have time to make Jasper but will make it on our next trip.

Greg, we ate at the "Keg" in Saskatoon and I bet your are familiar with that place.

Excellent! Good to hear you're planning a return trip.

I don't think the passport requirement is set in stone. I think there's a lot of discussion on this issue. Tourism on both sides of the border stands to suffer significantly if this requirement is upheld. For example, a lot of Florida businesses will have revenue losses if snowbirds from Canada can't make it down to enjoy the nice weather during March break.

Glad you had a good trip.

When I was a student I lived about 1/2 a block from there. Though it's wasn't a Keg then, it was a Greek restaraunt call Cousin Nik's.
