Very simple (and probably stupid) question...

I've just bought a basic Maglite - a 2D one, and fitted a Terralux TLE-6EXB upgrade, and i'm already wishing that I splashed out just a tiny bit more for a 3D or 4D light.
Would replacing the standard 1.5v D batteries with two of these 3.6v batteries boost the power to something more like a 4D mag? Or would it break it? Or would it simply not work?

Could I do the same thing with my AA Minimag? (also upgraded)

Also, how much life should I expect to get out of them? It'd cost £28 for two of them, wouldn't want to be replacing them too often..

Thank you!

I believe the terralux drop in wont take 2x4.2V because it uses a boost circuit. Higher voltage than with using alkaline cells may damage it.

But anyways it wont mke much difference in output by using 3 cells since it is rated 140 lumens max. There is a terralux frop in with 300 lumens, more expensive of course.

If you're not content with the Terralux's 140 lumens, you should either look into getting a more powerful Malkoff 240 lumen drop-in, or skip the Mag format altogether and get a high-output light without having to buy new bits and pieces; one good example would be a Quark AA2, which can output over 200 lumens on two common AA cells, for $59.

Thank you, i'll keep an eye on Malkoff's site and order one when it becomes available.

What about using a converter to convert multiple AA batteries into a D? Would 2xAA batteries in a converter still give 1.5v, or double that?

What about my Minimag? Beyond simply installing a TLE-6EXB, is there any way I can make it brighter? I wish to use the 2D Mag as a large spotlight for lighting rooms, and to carry the Minimag with me at all times.
I'd much rather stick with the Maglite format, simply because it is a beautiful piece of design!

Thanks for the replies..

Using a standard series adapter, each AA adds 1.5 volts; the idea is to get a 2D/6AA adapter (totaling 9 volts) and then put the 6D Mag bulb in (which runs on 9 volts), so you get 6D output in the 2D size.

Not without getting into the rare/expensive hotwire mods.

The Maglite design is about price-point engineering; similar to the Willys Jeep or the Zippo lighter, it's about getting the most out of a simple design at a specific low cost. If you're willing to spend more, you can get far more engineering - the aforementioned Quark supersedes the Mag in any given design aspect, but it comes down to what you want to spend and what your application demands.
