I modded my original Vinet, yes the one with the aluminum reflector, with a Seoul Semiconductors Z-Power LED Emitter (U-bin). Straight drop in, the star was electrically isolated I just added a dab of silicon heatsink compound on the bottom for better heatsink action. WOW, I am seriously impressed! Lights up a room and gives a good 60 feet of nice clean white light, will just light up a tree at 180'. Low is a good usable light, but compared to high, it is a little weak. More side-spill, but with the "angry fist of god" like beam coming out the end, more than enough light!

Maybe if I get really ambitious I will take a beam shot or two, but there are others out there of this emitter.

The have done that in january but i have only a vinet with plastic reflector, it is quite bright ;). Thereby i scratched the window :(

I did mine with both a Cree XR-E and a SSC Z-Power. I like the Cree more, but the SSC Z-Power is very close.

Cree- Whiter, larger spot beam with brighter sidespill. Have to raise the emitter.
SSC Z-Power- Bright focused beam with a slightly blueish tint. Emitter drops in.

Yes, a very easy mod, assuming you get one where the reflector comes out easy.

Alright, here are a few pics to tide you guys over...

All in pieces, the light had been dropped and I believe that is what loosened the glue holding the top portition on and the reflector in. Also put a small chip in the edge of the lens, but it is small enough it doesn't show when assembled.

Nice close-up of the new emitter.

Assembled, lights off.

Lights ON! I will post some proper beam shots when it is dark.

My first try on making a beamshot. At about 6 m down the basement. I thing the camera has stepped down the exposure automaticly :(

nice shot :)
maybe i should try to swap to ssc p4.
But i just love the edison opto on my Vinet becoz that is the purpose for me to have the Vinet and the Edison Opto !
Oh!Boy! decision,decision....

I have one of these I wanted to mod as well.

Is there a way to get at the area under the star to install some kind of a controller board [cough]pigletfromgoldserve[/cough]?

If you do a swap let me know what you like better. I actually prefer the Edison Opto over the SSC P4. The SSC P4 has a bright spot beam, but somehow the tint is a little too blueish for me. The Edison Opto also has a bright spot beam, but has that yellowish corona. Overall I prefer the Edison Opto for the spot and better spill.
The yellowish corona can be minimzed by using a different reflector, you may lose some of the tight focus on the beam, but it gives a better spot flood.

Another cool mod is with the LILL and a Edison Opto with a part stippled reflector and a modified Surefire U2 tailcap for momentary switch.

Well everyone,
This morning i damage my Edison Opto in my Vinet while try to pry the reflector off of the Vinet head via a small gap between the emitter and the reflector :(
Not so much damage on the Edison dome compare to the stock Vinet emitter dome the last time i swapped it but i think i might pry the reflector at the wrong place of the Edison dome becoz when i look closely at the Edison dome,3 out of 6 bonding wires was lifted off of the yellow phosphor :(
Damn! That emitter has been serve me well with no issue at all and now I'm the one who ruined it and not becoz of overheating!Anyhow i have another Vinet with Edison which i gave to my wife so i swapped mine with the SSC P4 USWOJ and the results is ok - beautiful beam but not a throw mini monster like the Edison one.
My first screw up mod - hopefully the last one.All the while i was really carefull.
I miss my Vinet Edison and the performance too,i have another Edison star but that one is for the AAA Bryne from Kai which i will swap once the light arrived.
My bad.

You've got to watch those stars from Deal Extreme. They use a white grease for thermal transfer, and often the emitter is not seated against the star fully. If the color shifts from white to bluish, you can probably improve the thermal transfer.

I unsolder the terminals, clean off the white grease, use Arctic Silver compound in it's place. Then I bend the terminals up slightly and replace the emitter. After initial soldering, I go back and push the terminals down one at a time while reheating the terminal. This puts a permanent pressure from the emitter against the star.

The one in this picture could stand to be centered better anyway. :)

I'm with Paul on that. I had to do that with my MTE 3W Seoul light (2xRCR123). After just a couple of minutes of being on, the tint would shift to an angry blue. I removed the emitter and re-heatsinked it. I also cleaned the old heatsink compound from under the star board and added new. Light works perfect now...no tint shift after prolonged operation.

I change tailcap on my 2nd Vinet Edison Opto with a tailcap from Surefire G2 Nitrolon.
A little fat but shorter and it feels good on my hand.
Twist full for constant ON .
Twist to the other direction to OFF or for momentary ON
Looks cool too :D

I used new silicon grease from one of the free tubes supplied with a heatsink. Yes, I know Arctic Silver would be better, but no tint shifting an even heat distribution even after extended run times indicate adequate performance to me. I am fine with the few degrees of heat transfer I am giving up by not using AS. The emitter was centered before the light was re-assembled.

For a while I had my Vinet loaded up with a Cree Emitter, and a cheap plastic reflector salvaged from a different light. Recently, I decided to go for a different look, and instead loaded the light with a Cree optic, to produce more of a "wall of light" rather than a light designed for throw.

Here are some photos:

The Cree that is in here happens to be my best in terms of color rendering. IMO the flood produced by the optic makes better use of it than the crappy reflector I had in there before that produced an ugly ringy beam.

Just did the same mod here with the Vinet. It works very well except there is so much glue inside the head, I can't get it to re-thread.

Does anyone know of any good glue remover??

Depends on the glue, but I've had good luck with "Goof-Off". It's pretty much just lighter fluid, so use it outdoors :)
You can also search your hardware store in the paint section - there are some products for graffiti and adhesive removal, but they're sold by the pint.
