I am not to concerned with run time, I would be happy if it lasted 30 minutes. But I want to run Alkalines, what is out there. I like the Hotwire but I do not want to run special batteries.

If you're staying with alkalines, you can play with other bi-pin bulbs, but I doubt you'll see anything dramatic. I suppose you could try the 1-AA solitaire bulb in the 2AA mag, but even if it doesn't instaflash, it won't last very long.

If you're willing to use Li-ion, search for "Auroralite minimag"; flashlight reviews had a good review.

alkaline can't reliably deliver anything over an amp, and at an amp, an alkaline isn't delivering anywhere near it's full capability. Around 0.8AH for a AA when driving an amp, dropping from 1.6V down to 0.8V during that time, In theory, if you could find the perfect bi-pin lamp, it would be capable of delivering about 30 lumens diminishing to 3 lumens in about 45 minutes.

Reality is that alkaline shouldn't be used in anything but the television remote :)
