got a few of these lites, and would like to get one of them above par.
are the Terralux drop ins the best way to go?

also i would like to up a couple of the 2AA M@gs as well...........

Last time I checked, TerraLux made LED drop-ins... this is the incandescent threads. The Terralux drop-ins are way better than the stock krypton bulbs, then again, anything is better than that. I have 3Ds fitted the MagLED and the MaxStar5 TLE-6K2; the MagLED is initially brighter but the TLE-6K2 has better run time and regulation. Just dropping in these modules is easy enough, LEDs are dependable and shock resistant.

If you want some better light output, search for the Mag85. A little more complicated, but it's mostly just switching out parts. Some of these Mag85s claim well over 800+ torch lumens. More output at the expense of reliability (and much more expensive too; $30~ vs $100~).

Tons of options for the MiniMag 2AAs as well. Theres Sandwich Shoppe upgrades and Terralux 5K2 upgrades as well. I personally EDC a MM 2AA TLE-5K2; it's the (to my knowledge) strongest and easiest drop in module yet.

Probably the MagLEDs. They're easy to get (just go down to the store) and they have some degree of heat management built into them. I think the DB-3W is a direct drive without any kind of heat management. But you may want to try one of each before getting a bunch of either.

For MiniMags, you might want to see what the NiteIze Luxeon module will do when it comes out (I'd pass on the IQ switch though.)

Just dawned on me that your post probably should have gone into the LED forum.

thx for the answers............i wasn't sure where to post.

at first i though the LED forum, but then i thought hmmmmm, this is an incadescent light i want to modify:laughing: .........now i know.

been really hooked since joining here a month or so back.........lotsa great topics here.

The easiest "mod" of a 3D M*g (or many other 3D sized lights) is a piece of 1" PVC pipe right at 7 1/2" long and 4 C Cell batteries.

4 cells against a 3 cell bulb is not too terrible of overdrive and is pretty bright.

3 cell also happens to be the "sweet spot" of M*gleds.

Hmmm...It's been so long ago, I can't recall? I know it was a Terralux LED. I assume I would have gotten the right size LED for the light which would have been a 3D cell bulb. I guess I'm out of luck.

The Terralux MaxStar5 TLE-6K2 works great in the 3D M@G, not super bright but a great improvement over the original bulb, I have had mine going all night without any problems

I had this one in my 3D, very, very bright, but no focus, very easy to install, unsrew, kick out the reflector, put in the replacement and screw in the bezel again.
3 selected Luxeon III LEDs.
11 Watt and 261 Lumen (That´s what they tell in the website)

Could I convince you to give a URL?

I'm wondering if this LED could handle the 4 C cell modification?

The unit is ideally suited for 4-6 cells - apparently it is not as bright on 3 cells - which is why I am going the hotwire route with my 3D. (and will probably get the K2 for my 4D)

Okay so I did my first modification! I went to the local Home Depot and got two pieces of schedule 40 1"ID white PVC pipe cut ot 7.5". I then placed four (4) C-cell batteries in my two (2) three (3) D-Cell mags. One has the standard buld and one has the Terralux 3watt LED.

Good News... both lights functioned and appear brighter to my eye. I have no fancy testing equiptment, just my eye. To me, they both appear brighter.

Question, is there a suggested bulb upgrade that would give me better performace that is a drop in? I'm not so good with the welding and the like.

Thanks,
Gary

Today I finally bought a Magled 3D drop-in after reading so much about it that it is the brightest of the drop-ins that Mag offers.

The output seems to be lower than my BOG 3w drop-in and my Luxogen 3w on RCR 3.7v, is this normal? Was quite dissapointed with the output or did I get a bad unit? although it throws better but overall output is not what I expected.

Anyone can offer a comparison with their Magled 3D and your existing 3w lights?

That sounds about right Xenon.

Remember we are using SMO reflectors with this. I have Writeright or a Diffusing Lense on all my M*gleds, and I see about what you describe.

A NICE pretty tight spot with very decent spill.

I STILL say a M*gled knocks the socks off a 2 or 3 cell Krypton!!!
