This is the 1st of three novels on the story line. Here is the plot in a nutshell, it is 2003 and the US is on the verge of invading Iraq. An energy wave from space hits North America and kills all human life. The science is not explained, the story is about how the world reacts with the sudden removal of the US.
What is left of the US is Alaska, Hawaii, the US territories and military bases, and the area around Seattle.
With no one in the cities the continental US burns. A toxic cloud circles the northern hemisphere and acid rain causes environmental collapse.
Without the worlds policeman old grudges are settled.
Without the worlds largest consumer and debitor the global economy collapses.
If you are a fan of this genre only start it on a Friday after work. It will consume your weekend. Birmingham tells the story through the trials and trevails of his characters. You will root for their survival but it is not a pretty story with a happy ending.
