According to the NHC, Ivan has achieved the 6th lowest pressure ever in
the
Atlantic basin.
"MAXIMUM SUSTAINED WINDS ARE NEAR 165 MPH...270 KM/HR...WITH HIGHER
GUSTS. IVAN IS AN EXTREMELY DANGEROUS CATEGORY FIVE HURRICANE ON THE
SAFFIR/SIMPSON HURRICANE SCALE. AN AIR FORCE RESERVE UNIT HURRICANE
HUNTER
AIRCRAFT MEASURED A MINIMUM CENTRAL PRESSURE OF 912 MB...26.93
INCHES. THIS IS THE
SIXTH LOWEST CENTRAL PRESSURE ON RECORD FOR A HURRICANE IN THE ATLANTIC
BASIN..."
Also from the looks of this chart, if it were to make landfall at this
strength, which is fairly unlikely, it would be #3 of all time for
lowest
pressure:http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/pastint.shtml
Mitch is the next milestone to pass... Ivan is now within 6 millibars
of
Super Hurricane Mitch in 1998. Mitch killed over 9,000 people when it
Honduras in Central America.
