FYI: Guy was stranded, freezing and in real trouble in the wilderness for 4 days, and apparently facilitated his eventual rescue w/ flashlight strobe. I gather it was a chopper that spotted him. Clearly this can and does happen:

"I had a flashlight with a strobe on it and it's getting dark and as they're coming back, I'm strobing them. I said, 'Look, man, I'm so sorry. I made a really bad choice in judgment here,'" said Lendriet.

At night any flash of a light is ideal for spotting in remote areas. When I was on air support we could spot a flash of a light from miles away. If there are no obstructions between us then we'd even spot a lit cigarette from a good distance. Having a flashlight with you is the important bit but I would not buy one just because it has a strobe function.
In daytime a mirror is a also good signaling tool.
