They are also coming out with a YG/IR KROMA but I'm guessing it still uses a Luxeon III.

Re: Surefire announced 2 new Cree lights today!

Funny point: Maybe SF has a lot of 3 watt LED's left over??

Serious point: I bet it's a drop-in, as SF has, in the past, stated that it wanted to veer away from incans. This would make sense, as a drop in could replace all the P-series modules.

BUT, I wonder how the thermal issues in the G2 will be handled?

Re: Surefire announced 2 new Cree lights today!

This is the first powerful plastic led light I've heard of. I've even been a little skeptical of titanium 3w lights for thermal reasons. We'll see.

The 80 lumen 12 hour figure is clearly not constant lumens, especially since SF rates torch lumens (so 80 SF lumens is like 110 or so Fenix lumens). They need 110 lumens coming out the led (or more), and at 110 lumens/watt (still way overoptimistic) that means 11WH, while two cr123a's have just 8 WH or so.

I'd expect some kind of gently sloping regulation.

This may actually get me to buy a Surefire LED light if the price/performance holds up.These two lights are much closer to my price point for a single light.Surefire will be much more competative with Fenix,INOVA and Lumapower at those prices.

If it's a drop-in we can make our own 6PL-Defender!

Re: Surefire announced 2 new Cree lights today!

The 6PL says: 'precision reflector produces a smooth,
user-friendly beam that's perfect for navigating trails, changing a tire, or
investigating a noise outside.'

Nothing in the G2L re: reflector but I'd assume LOP reflectors for both.

paulr - eGear 'makes' a K2 based light (claimed 130L, certianly 100+) that is made of polymer - it's a pretty nice light actually. http://www.batteryjunction.com/xt-130-.html

The pictures of both look just like a regular G2/6P and on the 6P one it just says 6P on it so I'd assume for the literature they just used a stock photo. I wouldn't expect them to look any different though - why re-engineer the bodies and complicate production?

Cydonia - Thanks, we've been really busy. :) There may be some /unoff-brand drop-ins available that might outperform these but I imagine Surefire could care less about them; they'll sell tons of these lights and the 'typical' SF buyer will happily pay a bit (bit = 2X) more for a lifetime warranty and the Surefire name.

<< Question I cannot answer. :)
What types of batteries will fit.
What voltages will be accomodated.
Whether the LED units will be available for retrofit or are even compatable with the old bodies.
When the lights will actually ship.
If the runtimes are real; what the current to the emitter is. >>

LOL. You can always identify the retailers who are regular visitors to these Forums....

The Cree G2 would be the perfect emergency preparedness light - indestructible, bright, long runtime. . .

It would be exciting if Surefire would start selling a cree drop-in for their lights, just like everyone else.

I wonder if the new Cree G2 head will fit on the standard G2. Maybe they will have it as an upgrade for the G2

Not to take the wind out of anyone's sails, but I already have a G2L of sorts - It's a regular G2 with a FlashlightLens glass lens and a WolfEyes Cree drop-in module. Sweeeeeeeeet. :D

Ughh... was hoping for a C2L and C3L. I like the 6P, but the type 2 finish just isn't durable enough for my taste.

Still will buy one though, as that is great runtime at 80 lumens--hopefully most of it regulated.

The G2L looks interesting, but I worry there may not be enough heatsink with the plastic body.

Re: Surefire announced 2 new Cree lights today!

I am just about to order one SF Kroma, does anybody have the slightest rumor that they will replace the LED with Cree sometime in the near future, this year or next that is? Is it likely? Should I wait or order the regular Kroma today.

Kroma + Cree = :naughty:
