64623 with stock KIU mod?

I've just built up a 3D quad-bored light. Running on 12xAA with FM holder. I'm using a Kiu bi-pin switch mod as per Kiu's instructions. Put some high temp insulation behind the ceramic socket too.

I notice that after a very few minutes, it's getting pretty warm around the head / switch area.

Opinions please: Am I ok pulling this much current through the "stock" Kiu switch mod? Is there anything else I should be doing to the switch?

Thanks for your help,
Bill

Hello Bill.

For what it is worth, I have run the same 64623 setup with the KIU switch mod.

So far, my observation is that the switch is handling the est. 8.7 amp draw ok. I have not done anything else to the switch mod. But the whole light does get very hot for runtimes of 1 min. or more. I even have FM's cammed/camless reflectors with heatsinking, plus one of his finned heads and the beast still gets pretty hot.

When I run this setup, it is really for a wow light for very short bursts. I have not tried to run it for the full runtime, of, say, 8 min. I have also tried, just for the pure heck of it, an Osram 64633 15V, 150W bulb. Not exactly pure hardcore CPF hotwire mode by underdriving a bulb, but for a short while with the CBP1650's fresh off the charger until the voltage sag kicks in, it is one bright light! Probably in the 10amp area with 3000+ torch lumens. Practically needed an oven mitt just to hold the light. The switch did not melt on me though.

Regards.

Hi zehnmm,

Kind thanks for the information! That puts my mind at ease.

My host is a beautiful Mirage Man finned head HA 3D. I am using an FM LOP, no cam. Yes, these things really put out the heat!

In order to get a good beam on mine, I had to replace the supplied 10mm Kiu standoffs with some 5.3mm ones to lower the bulb in the reflector. With other hotwire builds (1185 / 5761), I've had to shim to raise the bulb.

BTW, I'm trying some Titanium 1800's instead of CBP1650 and find them to be quite good so far.

Thanks again,
Bill

Hello Bill.

Thanks for the tip on the Titanium 1800's. I recently sold my stock of CBP 1650s and just may have to get the 1800's.

Regards,

Steve

As I recently posted, CBP is about to get their new Elite AA cells in stock. Nothing wrong with the Titanium 1800's, but I think these new Elites will significantly outperform his old CBP 1650's

Lux,

I missed your post about these new cells. Can you point me to it or provide some info here? I was literally just about to order 12 Titanium 1800s tonight... Should I wait or go ahead? Thanks!

Last message I got from Mike @ CBP....he is told they will be in stock the end of July. If you are not in a hurry, maybe send an email to [email protected] and see how close they are. Like I said, nothing wrong with Titanium 1800's, but he says these new Elite AA's will be the best of any he has seen to date.
