what lights have VERY good spill output , something like a L2d or better ,i was playing around and i noticed when i put a beam on the fence with a Malkoff the spill on the grass was not so great as compared to the little Fenix which seemed to look like it put out a wall of light ,lighting up everything in the immediate area , the malkoff could launch a beam to mans land and oddly when indoors the spill is fantastic wide and bright and lights up the room but outdoors its like it dissapeared compared to the L2d....so what light can pump out spill that will light up EVERYTHING within 30ft outdoors

I understand the Novatac is better at putting out a "wall" of light than the Fenix lights. I kinda feel a Novatac and a Tiablo would provide the ultimate in Short/Long range combos.

For a bright wall of sidespill as well as a centeral zone of bright light you can't go wrong with the KL4 head mounten on any number of 2 cell or single cell bodies.
That said the cr2ION does the same thing on a miniature and microscopic scale.
I own a number of KL4's and couldn't like a production flashlight head more.
The kl$ ROCKS.

That's Easy. One word: Surefire.

They don't call it WALL OF LIGHT for nothing.. The L4 and U2 especially, excels in this category. They'll make others look like a pathetica beam of light shining out from a toilet roll.

Hey qip,
The best spill is obviously going to come from a Cree based light and I think the Wolf Eyes Cree module has the best spill I've seen. I was out camping a few weeks ago and walked some trails at night. Pointing the flashlight down the trail I could still see the ground in front of me as I walked. I had a Fenix P3D with me and choose the WE since it had so much spill.

Actually, I thought Seoul emitters are better for spill due to their gummy dome. Because of their design and typical "cree halo" I thought Crees are better in throwy applications.

really curious on this reflector for my malkoff ... but for relative gonna need something that can run off store bought batteries so multi led setups are kinda out cuz of nimhs , maybe the tri led malkoff as it can do 4d alks...surefire looks nice but the runtimes im seeing are very poor trying for 2 hours at least

The best light in my collection for spill output is the Surefire U2. Coupled with the variable brightness feature, the light is damn near perfect in every respect. Big bucks, but outstanding performance.

Is everyone here confused about what the term "spill" refers to? Spill is the light coming from the emitter that does not hit any part of the reflector or bezel. In other words, it's light coming directly from the emitter. A bare emitter on a test bench would produce the most spill. The almighty Surefire:rolleyes: is not any better at producing spill than a Fenix. In fact, the more spill you have, usually means the less throw you have, or at least a very small and narrow hotspot.

So when one asks for the best spill, you must ask what he means by best. Best as in largest spill? That would depend on how shallow the reflector is because a shallow reflector increases the angle of the beam making it wider. If you want a brighter spill, that would depend simply on the emitter itself (aside from all the other things that effect emitter output). Some emitters produce more light at angles more than other emitters. Cree's come to mind when I think about spill.

To the poster above who mentioned the Seoul as the best for it's gummy milky dome, this would not be a reason for good spill because again, spill is light that comes directly from the emitter and does not hit the reflector. So a dirty emitter dome actually weakens the spill.

That's classic.

Anyhow, you'll get good spill with:
-A Seouled Scorpion LED. It has the same diameter spill as an L2D (on turbo), but about the same brightness.
-A Cree Huntlight. Narrower spill, but about the same brightness.
-A TL-2 or TL-3. Much dimmer spill than an L2D on turbo, but much wider.
-Anything with a bare emitter or a diffuser.

Do you still want to be able to use it for throw, while at the same time having good spill? Will the Malkoff with a stippled reflector be enough for you?

the malkoff and L2d ,i also have p3d ...they all have very good spill but OF COURSE :) i wouldnt mind having something brighter , checking the numbers on L4 u2 on flashlightreviews ,even found some google beamshots they seem to be good while using old luxeons so a cree or seoul upgrade would fair better but then theres that $200 price tag whoa and even then it may only be marginally brighter than p3d ,figuring output is 8800-9000 output in review and surfires are around 5500 so a seoul or cree would bring it up to fenix standards at least " sounded funny surefire meeting fenix standards" :faint:

the throw not really a factor but i would like a reflector & not go candle mode , so i guess in order to really blow away a fenix is multi led set-ups

Ultrafire C2 has a great wide spill that is bright. The Pelican 7060 has the brightest spill of all my lights, but it is by no means the widest. The Seoul P4 Brightstar Lighthawk led lantern (spotlight) has the widest led spill I have seen.
