Denting a RCR123

So I've been using a Tenergy LiFePo4 RCR123 in my G2l with a M60 for a while now. Works pretty well. I took out the cells to charge, and I pop one in the charger.

Hmm.. thats funny. Is it facing the wrong way? No. Did the cell shrink? I didn't think so. But then I looked at the back end of one of the cells. The negative terminal surface has been dented in by about a milimeter. It's been sitting in the G2L for a while now, and I guess the pressure from the tailcap was a bit much.

I've stopped using them, and I don't know if I want to order more. Has anyone else had their batteries dented in? Is it possibly just a weak cell?

Sorry but I am only able to contribute a very little.

There are not many threads on this topic, here's one that might provide at least some background information:

FWIW, I know that AW has upgraded cushioning under a substantial steel cap on the negative end. Don't know about Tenergy. I wouldn't feel all that comfortable using any dented LiIon, cells are inexpensive enough to replace when doubtful.

RCR123's have very poor capacity though, 400-500 mAh under a 1 amp load. A single AW 17670 will give you nearly as much output with the M60 and will simply bury 2xRCR123 for runtime, having 50% more stored energy than 2xRCR123. That's what I would replace it with.

Good luck,

Hello Qoose,

I believe there is a little room to allow for a minor dent, but it is not optimal.

A huge dent would cause the cell to short out internally. Make sure your little dent doesn't develop into a huge dent.
